About Palm Springs

Palm Springs is at the western end of the Coachella Valley, below the San Jacinto Mountains. Stay downtown on Palm Canyon Drive to walk to restaurants and the Art Museum. Uptown is the design-shop stretch. The south side is a shorter drive to the canyons.

Downtown runs along Palm Canyon Drive, with restaurant patios and shops, and the Palm Springs Art Museum near the western edge. The Historic Tennis Club district is just southwest. Its streets are quieter, and downtown is still an evening walk away. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is downtown on Indian Canyon Drive.

The Uptown Design District runs north on Palm Canyon Drive from Alejo Road toward Vista Chino. This is where the vintage furniture shops, galleries and smaller hotels are. Warm Sands and the Movie Colony are residential pockets, so check the exact hotel address before you count on a short walk to dinner.

South Palm Springs is closer to the Moorten Botanical Garden and the road to Indian Canyons. Palm, Andreas and Murray canyons are on Agua Caliente land. Tahquitz Canyon has its own visitor center and trail. None of them is a short walk from a central hotel. The Aerial Tramway leaves from Chino Canyon on the north side of town.

Winter and spring are the months for walking and hiking. July and August afternoons average above 100°F, so get outdoors early in the hot months. The tram climbs into much cooler mountain air. Palm Springs International Airport is east of downtown, and SunLine buses connect parts of the valley.

Questions about Palm Springs

How do I judge a Palm Springs hotel deal?

Compare the total cost with the trips you will make. A cheaper room far from Palm Canyon Drive can mean a ride every day.

Does the season change the value of a hotel location?

In the hottest months, a good pool and a short ride to dinner may matter more than trail access. In winter, being close to downtown and the canyons counts for more.

Should I compare parking charges?

Yes, especially if you will drive to Indian Canyons or the tram station. Read the room terms for the actual parking charge.
