About Phoenix

Phoenix spreads across the Salt River Valley. Museums and sports venues are downtown, arts stops line Central Avenue, and the desert preserves sit in the hills. Book in the part of town you will use most, because drives across the valley add up fast.

The Phoenix Convention Center, Mortgage Matchup Center, Chase Field and the Roosevelt Row arts district sit close together downtown. The light rail runs through downtown and north along Central Avenue, so book near a station if your trip is museums, games or meetings. Roosevelt Row has galleries, murals and independent restaurants. If you want quiet nights, check the exact block.

Midtown and Uptown follow Central Avenue past the Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum. Melrose District shops and nightlife line Seventh Avenue, west of the rail corridor. The Biltmore and Arcadia are resort and restaurant country. The rail does not reach them, so plan on rideshares or a car.

Papago Park, east of the center, holds the Desert Botanical Garden and its red sandstone buttes. Hikers head for South Mountain Park and Preserve and Camelback Mountain. In summer the heat on those trails can be dangerous. Go in the cool early morning and check park guidance before you set out.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is close to downtown. The free PHX Sky Train runs from the terminals to the Valley Metro station at 44th and Washington, and the light rail carries on into downtown. You can do a downtown stay without a car. Arcadia, the Biltmore and the trailheads are easier by road.

Where to stay in Phoenix

  • Downtown Phoenix

    • First visits
    • Events
    • Rail access
    • Business trips

Stay here if meetings or games bring you to town: the Convention Center, Mortgage Matchup Center and Chase Field are all downtown. Valley Metro Rail runs through the core and meets the PHX Sky Train to the airport. Hotels next to the venues trade a quiet evening for event access, so check the block.

Around here: Phoenix Convention Center, Mortgage Matchup Center, Chase Field

  • Roosevelt Row

    • Art walks
    • Restaurants
    • Nightlife
    • Walkable stays

The arts district north of downtown has murals, galleries and restaurants along Roosevelt Street. You can walk to dinner, and rail stops are close. First Friday and other event nights bring crowds.

Around here: Roosevelt Street, First Friday art walk, Margaret T. Hance Park

  • Midtown and Uptown

    • Museums
    • Rail access
    • Longer stays
    • Local dining

The Heard Museum and Phoenix Art Museum are both near rail stops on Central Avenue. Farther north, Uptown has neighborhood restaurants and shops. Without a car, book close to a station so downtown is one train ride away.

Around here: Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Central Avenue

  • Biltmore and Arcadia

    • Resorts
    • Dining
    • Shopping
    • Camelback access

The Biltmore resorts and Biltmore Fashion Park are on Camelback Road. Arcadia lies toward Camelback Mountain and Scottsdale. Pick this area for pool days and dinners out. Downtown is a drive or rideshare away.

Around here: Biltmore Fashion Park, Camelback Mountain, Arizona Biltmore

  • Papago Park and East Phoenix

    • Desert scenery
    • Garden visits
    • Outdoor mornings
    • Airport access

From East Phoenix, Papago Park and the Desert Botanical Garden are closer than from downtown. The red sandstone is the draw. Hotels are not always an easy walk from the park, and summer heat makes it worse, so plan on a car or rideshare.

Getting to Phoenix

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is just east of downtown. The free PHX Sky Train runs to the 44th Street/Washington Valley Metro Rail station, where trains continue into downtown. By road, Interstate 10 and Interstate 17 are the main ways in.

PHXPhoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

4 mi from downtown

To Downtown Phoenix
PHX Sky Train to 44th Street/Washington, then rail into downtown
To Biltmore and Arcadia
Taxi or rideshare, as there is no direct rail service

Take the free PHX Sky Train from either terminal to 44th Street/Washington, then Valley Metro Rail toward downtown. Taxis and rideshares reach districts away from the rail line.

Other ways to arrive

Rail
Valley Metro Rail links downtown with Central Avenue, Tempe and Mesa. Check the current A and B line map for your stop.
Car
Interstate 10 crosses Phoenix and Interstate 17 runs north from the city. Check parking charges at central and resort hotels.
Bus
Valley Metro buses reach many districts the rail misses, but rides get long across a metro area this size.

Questions about Phoenix

How do I judge a Phoenix hotel deal?

Start with the total for the whole stay, then put the hotel on a map next to your plans. A cheap room by the airport stops looking cheap if you drive to Camelback Road every day.

Does a downtown room save transport costs?

Yes, if your plans are Convention Center events, Roosevelt Row evenings or trips on the rail. If you bring a car, check the parking charge first.

Should I widen the search beyond downtown?

Yes, if your plans center on Papago Park or the Biltmore resorts. Staying near them saves long drives across the valley.
