About Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale runs from the New River and Las Olas Boulevard east to an Atlantic beachfront lined with hotels. Pick downtown for restaurants, museums and rail. Choose the A1A strip if your days start on the sand.

Las Olas Boulevard links downtown shops and restaurants with the beach, crossing canals along the way. The Riverwalk follows the New River past the historic Stranahan House, the NSU Art Museum and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Downtown is easier for a car-free city stay, but it is not a beachfront address.

Fort Lauderdale Beach runs along State Road A1A, with the main hotel strip between Las Olas and Sunrise boulevards. Bonnet House and Hugh Taylor Birch State Park sit near its north end. Check the hotel’s exact position: a waterway, road or block can separate a beach-view room from the sand.

Flagler Village lies north of downtown, close to the Brightline station and local dining. Victoria Park has smaller residential streets east of downtown. Farther north, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has a lower-rise beach center around Commercial Boulevard, though it is a separate town and a longer ride to Las Olas.

Winter and early spring bring the driest weather. Summer is hotter and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; hurricane season runs from June through November. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is south of downtown. Route 1 reaches the Broward Central Terminal, while the Tri-Rail airport station needs a terminal shuttle.
