About Seattle

Seattle sits between Elliott Bay and Lake Washington, and steep streets separate the waterfront from downtown and the neighborhoods. For a first visit, stay central near Pike Place Market and the ferry piers. Capitol Hill, Ballard and South Lake Union each mean a different daily route.

Pike Place Market, the Seattle Art Museum and the waterfront are all downtown. Belltown is just north, with restaurants between the market and Seattle Center. The hill from the piers up to Pike Place is steep. A waterfront hotel that looks close on the map can still mean a climb.

Seattle Center, with the Space Needle and the Museum of Pop Culture, sits below Queen Anne. South Lake Union is on its east side and suits business trips near the lake. Capitol Hill is east of downtown. It has the Pike/Pine restaurants and nightlife and a 1 Line station, and it is a very different stay from the waterfront.

Pioneer Square and the Chinatown–International District are near King Street Station and the stadiums. Ballard is north of the ship canal, with shops and the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. Fremont is also on the north side. Neither is on the 1 Line, so crossing the city from either means a bus or a rideshare.

Summer has the fewest rainy days and long evenings for ferry rides and parks. Rain comes back in autumn and stays common through spring. The 1 Line runs from Sea-Tac Airport to downtown, Capitol Hill and the University District. Ferries to Bainbridge Island and Bremerton leave from Colman Dock.

Where to stay in Seattle

  • Downtown and Pike Place Market

    • First visits
    • Airport rail
    • Museums
    • Ferry trips

Pike Place Market, the Seattle Art Museum and the 1 Line stations are close together here. A hotel near Westlake or Symphony station puts you on the airport train. The waterfront is downhill, so if you’re heading to the piers every day, count on the climb back.

Around here: Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum, Westlake Station

  • Belltown and Seattle Center

    • Restaurants
    • Seattle Center visits
    • Couples
    • Waterfront walks

Belltown runs north from Pike Place Market to Seattle Center, with restaurants along the way. You can walk to the Space Needle and the Museum of Pop Culture, but the nearest 1 Line station can be farther than it would be from a downtown hotel.

Around here: Space Needle, Museum of Pop Culture, Olympic Sculpture Park

  • Capitol Hill

    • Nightlife
    • Independent dining
    • 1 Line access
    • Longer stays

The Pike/Pine blocks have restaurants and music venues and stay busy in the evening. Capitol Hill Station is on the 1 Line to downtown and Sea-Tac Airport. If you want to sleep, pick the block with care: a room near the nightlife is louder than one on a quiet residential street.

Around here: Capitol Hill Station, Pike/Pine corridor, Volunteer Park

  • Pioneer Square and Chinatown–International District

    • Train arrivals
    • Sports events
    • Historic streets
    • Regional rail

Pioneer Square’s historic blocks sit by King Street Station and the stadiums. The Chinatown–International District has restaurants and a 1 Line stop. Stay here if you’re arriving by train or going to a game. The Space Needle and Ballard are a separate trip.

Around here: King Street Station, Pioneer Square Pergola, Lumen Field

  • South Lake Union

    • Business trips
    • Longer stays
    • Lake Union
    • Seattle Center access

South Lake Union suits work near the lake and visits to Seattle Center. The streetcar runs to downtown. If you’ll ride to the airport or Capitol Hill often, check current streetcar service and the walk to a 1 Line station.

Around here: Lake Union, Museum of History & Industry, South Lake Union Streetcar

  • Ballard and Fremont

    • Neighborhood dining
    • Longer stays
    • Ballard Locks
    • Northside visits

North of the ship canal, Ballard has a historic center and the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks. Fremont has shops and public art. Stay here if most of your plans are north of the canal. Getting to Pike Place Market or Sea-Tac Airport means a bus, or a ride to the train.

Around here: Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Ballard Avenue, Fremont Troll
