About Turin

Turin runs from the Savoy palaces of Piazza Castello down to the Po and the hills beyond it. Via Roma is the street for museums and arcades on foot. Stay at Porta Susa if you’re arriving by rail, or in San Salvario to have restaurants on your street.

Palazzo Madama, the Royal Palace and the streets of the historic center all meet at Piazza Castello. Via Roma leads south through Piazza San Carlo to Porta Nuova. The Egyptian Museum is just off this route, and the Mole Antonelliana and National Cinema Museum are east toward Vanchiglia.

The Quadrilatero Romano and nearby Porta Palazzo are good for market mornings and dinner in the old streets. The center is walkable, but a room over a busy restaurant lane can be noisy late at night. Porta Susa has the station and Metro Line 1, which helps with an early departure or a trip west along Corso Francia.

South of Porta Nuova, San Salvario sits between Via Nizza and Parco del Valentino on the Po. Its bars and restaurants mean you can eat near the hotel. Lingotto is farther south on Metro Line 1, near the Automobile Museum and the converted Fiat factory. Stay there for those two, not if you’ll be walking to Piazza Castello every day.

Long walks under the arcades and along the river are easiest in spring and early autumn. Summer afternoons at Caselle average in the low 80s °F, and winter mornings are much colder. Porta Nuova and Porta Susa are separate stops, so book near the one your train uses.

Where to stay in Turin

  • Piazza Castello and Via Roma

    • First visits
    • Museums
    • Walking

Stay near Piazza Castello for the Royal Palace, Palazzo Madama and the Egyptian Museum. Via Roma runs from the square through Piazza San Carlo to Porta Nuova. Being this central also means busy shopping streets outside.

Around here: Piazza Castello, Royal Palace, Egyptian Museum, Piazza San Carlo

  • Quadrilatero Romano and Porta Palazzo

    • Market mornings
    • Food
    • Evenings

The old street grid west of Piazza Castello has restaurants and small bars. Porta Palazzo market is on its northern edge. Expect more evening noise than on a quiet residential street.

Around here: Quadrilatero Romano, Porta Palazzo, Santuario della Consolata

  • Porta Susa and Cit Turin

    • Rail trips
    • Airport access
    • Short stays

Porta Susa has high-speed trains and the airport rail link, and Metro Line 1 stops at the station. Stay here for an early train or if you’re splitting the trip between Turin and other cities.

Around here: Torino Porta Susa, Corso Francia, Piazza Statuto

  • San Salvario and Valentino

    • Restaurants
    • River walks
    • Longer stays

South of Porta Nuova, San Salvario has restaurants close to Parco del Valentino and the Po. Choose a side street if you want the dining scene without a room directly above the busiest bars.

Around here: Parco del Valentino, Castello del Valentino, Porta Nuova

  • Lingotto

    • Events
    • Automobile Museum
    • Metro access

The former Fiat factory and the National Automobile Museum are the reasons to stay in this southern district. Metro Line 1 reaches Porta Nuova and Porta Susa, but the historic center is too far to walk back from.

Around here: Lingotto, National Automobile Museum, Lingotto metro

Questions about Turin

Where are the cheaper hotels in Turin?

Around Porta Susa and the Line 1 stations west of the center. Time the metro ride to Porta Nuova or Piazza XVIII Dicembre before you book.

Can I stay outside the historic center without a car?

Yes. Metro Line 1 connects Lingotto, Porta Nuova and Porta Susa. A hotel near a station saves a long walk back after museum visits.

What should I check on a cheap Turin room?

How far it is to the metro on foot. A station name in the listing doesn’t mean the station is close. In San Salvario, read the room details if you need quiet nights.
