About Bari

Bari is an Adriatic port with a medieval old town, a gridded shopping district and a long seafront. Stay in Bari Vecchia for San Nicola and the lanes, Murat for trains and shops, or Madonnella for the waterfront.

Bari Vecchia occupies the peninsula between the old and new harbors. Walk its narrow lanes to the Basilica di San Nicola, the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Norman-Swabian Castle. The streets are atmospheric but awkward with rolling luggage, and bars around the main squares can stay lively at night.

Murat begins just south of the old town. Its straight streets run past Via Sparano, Corso Cavour and Teatro Petruzzelli toward Bari Centrale. A room here makes an early train or airport transfer straightforward while keeping the old town within walking distance.

Madonnella follows Lungomare Nazario Sauro south of the center. The seafront and Pane e Pomodoro beach draw walkers and swimmers in warmer months. Pick a street near the water if the sea matters more than the station.

Bari is a good base for a short city visit or a rail trip through Apulia. Trains run south along the coast toward Lecce, while Matera sits inland on a separate railway. Work out your return train before an evening out.

Getting to Bari

Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport is about 5 miles northwest of the center. The Ferrotramviaria airport train reaches Bari Centrale in roughly 17 minutes. The main station also has longer rail trips along the Adriatic coast.

To Bari Centrale
About 17 minutes by train

Take the Ferrotramviaria train to Bari Centrale and finish the trip on foot, by AMTAB bus or by taxi. A pedestrian tunnel links the rail stop to arrivals. Check the last departure if you land late.

Other ways to arrive

Train
Bari Centrale has national and regional trains. Coastal services continue toward Monopoli, Brindisi and Lecce. Matera has its own line, run by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane.
Bus and walk
The old town and Murat are best explored on foot. AMTAB buses cover longer stretches toward the seafront and outer districts.
Car
A car is useful for inland Apulia. In the city it is a nuisance: the old town restricts access and central parking is awkward.

Questions about Bari

Where can I find good value in Bari?

Try the station end of Murat if you need trains, or Madonnella if you want the waterfront. The cheapest room is less useful if it adds a taxi to every outing.

Is a Bari Vecchia hotel worth a higher price?

It may be if San Nicola, the cathedral and evening meals in the old town fill your visit. For daily trains, Murat is usually simpler.

What should I include when judging a Bari deal?

Add any parking charge and the transport you will use. A room near Bari Centrale can save time on airport and coastal rail journeys.
