Budapest sits on both banks of the Danube. Castle Hill rises on the Buda side, and Parliament, the basilica and most central hotels are in Pest. Pick the bank by the walks you’ll repeat, especially the walk back after dark.
In Pest, you can walk between the riverfront, St. Stephen’s Basilica and Parliament from Belváros or Lipótváros. Deák Ferenc tér is where three metro lines meet the 100E airport bus. A room near the square saves transfers, but the streets around it carry steady traffic.
The Castle District is quieter at night than the bar streets of Pest. Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church stand above the Danube, and you reach them by steep approaches or a bus from lower Buda. Stay up here for early walks on Castle Hill. If dinner is in Pest, you cross the river and climb back afterwards.
Terézváros follows Andrássy Avenue from the Opera House toward Heroes' Square and City Park. Erzsébetváros, east of the avenue, has the Dohány Street Synagogue and the ruin bars around Kazinczy utca. If you’re a light sleeper, check the exact block and which way the room faces.
Long river walks are best in spring and early autumn. July and August average highs around 83 °F at Pestszentlőrinc, and winter afternoons are often near 40 °F. Use the metro, trams and buses for longer hops. Bring comfortable shoes for the cobbles and the Buda hills.
