Siena’s Piazza del Campo, cathedral and steep medieval lanes sit inside a compact walled center. Pick your hotel by the climb you will tolerate with luggage: the Campo for evenings out, Camollia for arrivals, the Duomo quarter for museums.
The shell-shaped Piazza del Campo is Siena’s civic center. Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia face the square, which becomes the Palio racecourse. Via di Città and Banchi di Sopra lead from the Campo to shops and restaurants. Rooms on those busy lanes can be noisy late at night.
West of the Campo, Siena Cathedral stands near Santa Maria della Scala. This hilltop quarter is good for early museum visits, but the lane down toward Fontebranda is steep. North of the Campo, the Basilica of San Domenico and Fortezza Medicea give a different view of the city.
Porta Camollia is the northern gate. Siena train station is outside the walls, and escalators through the Porta Siena shopping center shorten the climb toward the gate. Buses stop at Piazza Gramsci, which is closer to the old town than the station. Find out which stop you arrive at before you choose a hotel.
Cross the historic center on foot. The hills and stone paving are harder with heavy bags or a stroller than the map suggests. If you drive, park outside the ZTL or confirm your hotel’s authorized route before entering the center. July and August afternoons average highs near 87 °F, and November is the wettest month.
