Toledo stands above a bend in the Tagus. The cathedral, the Alcázar and the former Jewish quarter are all inside its steep old town. The train from Madrid is quick. Getting up to the higher streets with luggage takes some planning.
Plaza de Zocodover is the old town’s transport and meeting point. The cathedral is southwest through narrow lanes, and the Alcázar stands above the eastern side. Stay near Zocodover for buses and restaurants. The streets fill with day-trippers.
The Judería, west of the cathedral, holds Santa María la Blanca, El Tránsito synagogue and San Juan de los Reyes. Its lanes go quiet once the visitors leave. The stone streets and stairs are hard work with large bags.
The Tagus wraps around the old town. Puente de San Martín leads to riverside paths, and the Mirador del Valle across the river frames the skyline. A hotel outside the walls can mean a climb back after dinner.
Summer afternoons are very hot and dry. The slopes are easier to walk in spring and autumn, and winter is cool. The train station is below the old center, so take a city bus or taxi up if you have luggage.
