About Perugia

Perugia sits on a hilltop above the Umbrian valleys, with Etruscan walls, medieval lanes and the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria. Stay in the old town for the sights, or at Fontivegge if you want a flat walk from the train.

Piazza IV Novembre is the heart of the historic center. The Fontana Maggiore stands between the cathedral and Palazzo dei Priori, which houses the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria. Corso Vannucci runs south to Piazza Italia and the entrances to the underground remains of Rocca Paolina.

Hills decide every hotel choice in Perugia. The Etruscan Arch is north of the main square, and the lanes toward Via dei Priori drop steeply on the west side. South of the core, Borgo XX Giugno runs past San Domenico to the basilica of San Pietro. A street-level address on the map can still mean stairs or a long climb.

Fontivegge, the main rail station, is below the old town. The driverless Minimetrò runs from there to Pincetto near the center. Escalators rise from Piazza Partigiani through Rocca Paolina. If you arrive late, check the operating hours. A bus or taxi may be easier.

Perugia works as a rail base for Umbrian day trips, especially Assisi. Summer afternoons average near 88 °F, and winter nights can fall close to freezing. In the old town, ask the hotel about lift access and the route from the nearest drop-off before you bring heavy luggage.

Where to stay in Perugia

  • Piazza IV Novembre and Corso Vannucci

    • First visits
    • Museums
    • Evening walks

Stay around Piazza IV Novembre for the Fontana Maggiore, cathedral and Galleria Nazionale. Corso Vannucci runs to Piazza Italia. These central streets are lively, and a taxi may stop below your hotel instead of at its door.

Around here: Fontana Maggiore, Palazzo dei Priori, Corso Vannucci

  • Via dei Priori and Porta Santa Susanna

    • Quieter streets
    • Historic lanes

West of the main square, Via dei Priori runs toward the Sciri tower and the Pellini escalators. The lanes are quieter than Corso Vannucci, but the climb back up to the square is steep.

Around here: Via dei Priori, Torre degli Sciri, Pellini escalators

  • Borgo XX Giugno and San Pietro

    • Churches
    • Longer walks

South of Rocca Paolina, Corso Cavour and Borgo XX Giugno lead to San Domenico and San Pietro. Pick it for churches and a calmer evening, and allow time to walk uphill to the main square.

Around here: Basilica di San Domenico, Basilica di San Pietro, Giardini del Frontone

  • Fontivegge and the station

    • Train arrivals
    • Day trips
    • Short luggage transfer

Stay near Perugia Fontivegge for trains and the airport bus. The Minimetrò climbs to Pincetto during service hours, but the station district is a different world from the hilltop streets.

Questions about Perugia

Where should I stay for a week in Perugia?

Fontivegge keeps the trains close for Umbrian day trips. The center is better for the Galleria Nazionale and evening meals on foot.

What do I need in a long-stay room?

A real kitchen or refrigerator, laundry and a lift. Carrying groceries up old-town stairs gets tiring.
