The waterfront keeps the beach, buses and boats close for children. Above Piazza Duomo, ask about stairs, the lift and whether the room fits your whole group.

About Amalfi

Amalfi packs its cathedral, beach, ferry pier and bus terminus into a small valley at the sea. The center is easiest without a car. A room up the hillside gets a wider view, so check the steps and the walk back after dinner.

Piazza Duomo and the cathedral steps are just inland from the waterfront. The main street climbs toward the Museo della Carta and Valle dei Mulini. Stay between the piazza and the port to walk to boats, buses and restaurants. Both are crowded by day.

The beach is beside the ferry landing, handy for a dip between coastal trips, though the seafront has road and boat traffic. Atrani is a short walk east through the tunnel. The hill hamlets above Amalfi are a bus ride or a steep climb away.

Pogerola sits above the town, a quieter village with views down the valley. Lone and Vettica are farther west along the coast. Check whether your room is on the road, below it or up steps. Distance on the map says little about the climb.

The medieval maritime republic left a cathedral, an arsenal and a paper-making tradition. In the warm months, Amalfi is a good ferry base for Positano and the eastern coast. Take the bus to Ravello and the upper hamlets. When the coast is busy, allow more time on the road.

  • Piazza Duomo and centre

    • First visits
    • Cathedral and museums
    • Evening restaurants

The cathedral, main street and paper museum are all on foot. Choose this area for evenings in town. Rooms near the square hear the daytime bustle.

  • Waterfront and port

    • Ferry trips
    • Beach access
    • Easy arrivals

The ferry pier, beach and bus terminus line the shore. Arrival is easy here, but boat departures and the coastal road make it busier than the upper lanes.

Around here: Spiaggia Grande, Amalfi ferry pier, Arsenale della Repubblica

  • Valle dei Mulini

    • Walking trails
    • Paper museum
    • Quieter nights

The road inland passes the Museo della Carta and leads to old mills and the trail to Valle delle Ferriere. It is quieter than the shore, and the pier is a longer walk downhill.

Around here: Museo della Carta, Valle dei Mulini, Valle delle Ferriere

  • Pogerola

    • Hill views
    • Village stays
    • Walkers

This hill hamlet overlooks Amalfi. Book here for a village evening and valley views, then take the local bus to the beach and port. The footpath is steep.

Around here: Pogerola, Monte Falconcello, Valle dei Mulini

  • Lone and Vettica

    • Coastal views
    • Road trips
    • Quiet stays

These western hamlets spread along the coastal slope beyond the center. Ask about the nearest bus stop and the stairs before you book. The cathedral and pier are not a short level walk.

Around here: Lone, Vettica Minore, SS163 Amalfitana

Questions about Amalfi

Where do I stay in Amalfi with children?

Near the waterfront or the lower center. The beach and ferry pier are close, and you skip the steepest climbs with bags and strollers.

Is the beach close to the hotels in town?

Yes, between Piazza Duomo and the port. From Pogerola or farther west, you take a bus or walk much farther.

What should families ask a hillside hotel?

How many steps lead up from the road, whether there is a lift and what the room layout is. A sea view does not mean a level route to the beach.
