About Como

Como sits at the southwest tip of Lake Como, where ferries leave from the waterfront and the walled old town begins behind Piazza Cavour. Stay near the docks for lake trips, or near Como San Giovanni for early trains.

Inside the medieval walls, the cathedral faces Piazza Duomo and the streets around San Fedele lead south toward Porta Torre. The lanes are compact and mostly walkable, with cafés and shops between the squares. A central room saves trips across town, but on pedestrian streets a taxi may not reach the door.

Piazza Cavour opens onto the lakefront and the boat piers. East of the square, Sant'Agostino is close to the Como–Brunate funicular. To the west, the promenade passes the Tempio Voltiano and continues toward Villa Olmo. Ferries reach other lake towns, but routes and frequency vary by season, so check the boat back before you plan a day trip.

Como has two stations that matter. Como Lago ends beside the waterfront and links to Milano Cadorna through Saronno. Como San Giovanni, west of the center, has trains toward Milano Centrale and Switzerland. Stay on the lakefront for boats. A San Giovanni address can spare you a walk uphill with luggage.

Walk the shore in spring or early autumn. July has average daytime highs around 86 °F, and spring has more rainy days than midsummer. The funicular climbs to Brunate for views over the city and the western branch of the lake. Como is the town at the lake's southern end, not a hotel base for every lakeside village.

    • Historic streets
    • Restaurants

The streets between the cathedral, San Fedele and Porta Torre form Como's historic core. Stay here for restaurants and short walks to the lake. Check the exact entrance if arriving by car: pedestrian streets and restricted traffic can put the drop-off away from the door.

  • Piazza Cavour and the waterfront

    • Boat departures
    • Lake views
    • Como Lago arrivals

Piazza Cavour is close to the boat piers and Como Lago station. Stay here if you'll take several ferries. The old town is an easy walk. Rooms facing the promenade may hear more foot traffic in busy periods.

Getting to Como

Como has no airport of its own. From Milan Malpensa, the train runs through Saronno. Trains from Milan arrive at either Como Lago, by the waterfront, or Como San Giovanni, west of the center.

MXPMilan Malpensa Airport

22 mi from downtown

To Como Lago
Change trains at Saronno; allow around 1 to 1½ hours including the connection
To Old town
Walk from Como Lago or take a short taxi from Como San Giovanni

Take the Malpensa Express to Saronno, then change to the Como Lago service. A taxi or car takes the motorway, and travel time depends on traffic.

Other ways to arrive

Train from Milan
Trenord runs from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago via Saronno. Trains from Milano Centrale go to Como San Giovanni. Check which station is closer to your hotel.
Boat
Navigazione Laghi boats depart from the waterfront for towns farther up the lake. Fast and stopping services have different routes and seasonal timetables.
Car
The A9 links Como with Milan and the Swiss border. With limited parking and restricted streets, a car is more trouble than help in the center. Ask the hotel how to arrive.
Funicular
The Como–Brunate funicular leaves from the eastern waterfront and climbs to Brunate above the city.
