Assisi climbs the western slope of Monte Subasio. San Francesco is at one end of the walled center and Santa Chiara at the other. Pick a hotel with the uphill walk and your arrival point in mind.
The Basilica of San Francesco and its frescoes draw pilgrims and art lovers to the lower western end of town. Via San Francesco climbs to Piazza del Comune, where Roman columns front Santa Maria sopra Minerva. From there Corso Mazzini leads to Santa Chiara and its terrace over the Umbrian plain.
The higher streets around San Rufino and the Rocca Maggiore are quiet once the day visitors leave, but the walk back from the basilica is a climb. A room near Piazza del Comune splits the distance between the two basilicas. If you have luggage, check the hotel entrance. Many streets are steep, stepped or inside the limited traffic zone.
Assisi railway station is down in Santa Maria degli Angeli, away from the historic center. The C bus, signed Assisi Link, runs from the station to stops by San Francesco and Piazza Matteotti. The great basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli encloses the Porziuncola, so this district is worth a visit in its own right, not just a place to change trains.
San Damiano is below the eastern walls, and Eremo delle Carceri is uphill on Monte Subasio. Neither is on the short walk between the basilicas. For Eremo delle Carceri, take a car or taxi, or follow the signed trail. Spring and autumn suit long uphill walks. In summer, walk in the morning and rest in the shade in the afternoon.

Stay by the Basilica of San Francesco for an early visit to the upper and lower churches. Piazza Giovanni Paolo II is the nearby car park. The way to Piazza del Comune and Santa Chiara climbs through the old streets.
Around here: Basilica di San Francesco, Sacro Convento, Piazza Giovanni Paolo II
The piazza is between San Francesco and Santa Chiara, with the Temple of Minerva on the square and restaurants and shops along the central route. Stay here to walk to both ends of town. Whichever way you come home, it is uphill.
Around here: Piazza del Comune, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Corso Mazzini
Santa Chiara, the cathedral of San Rufino and the lanes up toward Rocca Maggiore are on the upper side of town. Porta Nuova has parking near Santa Chiara. The station bus and San Francesco are farther downhill.
Around here: Basilica di Santa Chiara, Cattedrale di San Rufino, Rocca Maggiore
The railway station and the basilica with the Porziuncola are on the plain below Assisi. Stay here if you come by rail or plan several Umbrian day trips. Take the C bus up to the old town, because the hill is not a short level walk.
Around here: Assisi railway station, Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, Porziuncola
April to June and September to October are milder for walking Assisi’s slopes. July and August are warmer and drier, and the climb between San Francesco and Santa Chiara feels longer in the afternoon. Winter is quiet but cold and damp.
Assisi station is in Santa Maria degli Angeli below the hill. Bus line C, the Assisi Link, runs to the historic center. If you drive, use the car parks by the walls and ask your hotel about limited traffic zone access.
