About Bergamo

Bergamo has two halves: the walled Città Alta on its hill, and the lower city around Porta Nuova and the railway station. Sleep in the upper town to walk out onto Piazza Vecchia. Stay down below if you have trains or the airport bus to catch.

Piazza Vecchia is the centre of Città Alta. Palazzo della Ragione, the Campanone and the cathedral square are a short walk apart. Via Colleoni runs west toward the Citadel and Colle Aperto. The Venetian walls circle the hill, and the gate at Porta San Giacomo is a fine way up on foot, but the climb is steep.

Città Bassa runs from the station up Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII to Porta Nuova and the Sentierone. Stay here for early trains and the Airport Bus. East of the centre, Borgo Pignolo leads to the Accademia Carrara and GAMeC. Borgo Santa Caterina, next door, has local shops and restaurants that fill up in the evening.

Bergamo has two funiculars. One climbs from the lower city to Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe. The other goes on from Città Alta up to San Vigilio. A room by Piazza Vecchia saves the ride up after dinner, but its old lanes are harder going with luggage than the streets by the station.

Walk the walls and the upper town in spring or early autumn. Summer afternoons get hot, and November is the wettest month. Direct regional trains run to Milan, but leave time to get down from Città Alta before you catch one.

Where to stay in Bergamo

  • Città Alta

    • First visits
    • Historic streets
    • Evening dining

From the lanes around Piazza Vecchia, Via Colleoni and Piazza del Duomo, you walk to the churches, the Campanone and dinner. You skip the daily climb. The catch is cobbles, narrow streets and limited car access, which make luggage and early departures harder.

Around here: Piazza Vecchia, Cappella Colleoni, Campanone, Via Colleoni

  • San Vigilio and Colle Aperto

    • Views
    • Quiet evenings
    • Hill walks

Colle Aperto is the northwest edge of Città Alta, by the funicular up to San Vigilio and the paths above the Venetian walls. It is quieter, has the views, and rewards a longer stay. Getting to the railway station means another bus or funicular ride.

Around here: Funicolare San Vigilio, Castello di San Vigilio, Colle Aperto, Venetian walls

  • Porta Nuova and station

    • Airport arrivals
    • Rail trips
    • Short stays

For trains and the Airport Bus, stay between the station, Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII and Porta Nuova. The Sentierone and Donizetti Theatre are close. Piazza Vecchia is up the hill, a bus or funicular ride away.

Around here: Bergamo station, Porta Nuova, Sentierone, Teatro Donizetti

  • Borgo Pignolo and San Tomaso

    • Art museums
    • Historic streets
    • Quieter stays

Borgo Pignolo runs east from the lower centre past old palazzi to the Accademia Carrara and GAMeC on Via San Tomaso. Pick it for museum days and calmer streets than Porta Nuova. The walk to the station is longer.

Around here: Via Pignolo, Accademia Carrara, GAMeC, Via San Tomaso

  • Borgo Santa Caterina

    • Local dining
    • Longer stays
    • Neighbourhood streets

Past the art museums, Borgo Santa Caterina has local shops, places to eat and a neighbourhood crowd in the evening. It is a way from the station. If you have early departures, look up the bus route and the walk first.

Around here: Via Borgo Santa Caterina, Accademia Carrara, GAMeC

Getting to Bergamo

Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) is just outside the city. The ATB Airport Bus runs from it to the station, Porta Nuova and Città Alta. Regional trains go to Milano Centrale.

BGYMilan Bergamo Airport

3 mi from downtown

To Bergamo station
About 15 to 20 minutes by Airport Bus, traffic permitting
To Città Alta
Allow extra time for the uphill bus or a funicular change

The ATB Airport Bus stops at Bergamo station, Porta Nuova and on the way up to Città Alta. Check whether your bus goes all the way uphill, or change to the lower funicular. With heavy bags, take a taxi.

Other ways to arrive

Train
Trenord runs direct trains between Bergamo and Milano Centrale. Bergamo station is at the foot of Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII.
Bus and funicular
ATB line 1 runs from the airport to the station, Porta Nuova and the upper town. The Città Alta funicular climbs from the lower town, and a second one carries on to San Vigilio.
Car
The A4 connects Bergamo with Milan and Verona. Città Alta restricts cars and has little parking, so ask the hotel how to get there before you drive uphill.

Questions about Bergamo

Where should I stay if my flight might change?

Around Porta Nuova or the station, on the Airport Bus route. If you land at a different hour, the bus still drops you close.

Is every room at a refundable hotel cancellable?

No. Read the deadline and payment terms on the room you pick, since they can differ within one hotel.

Can I combine flexibility with a Città Alta stay?

Yes. Read the room’s terms, then sort out how you get up the hill from the airport or the station.
