Pamplona’s old town sits above the Arga River, with the cathedral, Plaza del Castillo and the San Fermín route in its narrow streets. The Citadel and the newer grids of Ensanche are a few blocks away at a slower pace.
In the Casco Antiguo, Calle Estafeta runs toward the bullring and Plaza del Castillo is the square for café tables. The cathedral and the city walls are on the northern edge. Rooms on the busiest pintxo streets are loud, especially during San Fermín.
The First and Second Ensanche have wider streets around Paseo de Sarasate and Avenida Carlos III. The bus station is near the Citadel, so this is where many visitors arrive. The Citadel and Vuelta del Castillo are green space beside the center.
West of the Citadel, Iturrama and the Yamaguchi Park area are more residential. Pick them for longer stays or for the university and hospital. For the cathedral, take a bus or walk farther.
San Fermín takes over the city from July 6 to 14. The rest of the year, Santo Domingo, Mercaderes and Estafeta are ordinary old-town streets. Pamplona is also on the Camino de Santiago, which continues west toward Puente la Reina.
Stay in the old town for the cathedral, Town Hall and the pintxo streets around Plaza del Castillo. Calle Estafeta is here too. If you are close to the late-night bars, ask for a quiet room.

Ensanche’s broader streets put the shops, Paseo de Sarasate and the bus station close to the old town. It is an easy base if you arrive by coach and want smoother pavements for luggage.

The Citadel and Vuelta del Castillo are the green edge west of the old center. Taconera gardens are nearby. Stay here for park walks, and Plaza del Castillo is still a walk away.

Iturrama is a residential choice west of the center, near Yamaguchi Park and the university and hospital. For the cathedral, you walk farther or take a bus.

July and August have the fewest rainy days, but San Fermín from July 6 to 14 makes the center much busier. May and June bring green parks and more rain, and October and November are also often wet. August highs are in the mid-80s °F, and winter mornings can approach freezing.
Pamplona Airport (PNA) is about 4 miles south of the city. Aena lists a scheduled shared taxi to Paseo de Sarasate that requires a reservation. The rail station is about a 30-minute walk from the old town.
