Alicante’s old center wraps around Mount Benacantil, with the castle above and the Mediterranean beside the Explanada. A hotel near Postiguet beach is a different stay from one on the long Playa de San Juan.
The Santa Cruz lanes climb below Santa Bárbara Castle. At their foot, the old town holds the Basilica of Santa María, the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás and small squares. El Barrio has bars that stay busy late, so look at the street before you pick a room.
The Explanada de España runs along the port, and Postiguet beach is just past the old town. Mercado Central and the Luceros tram stop are farther inland. The main rail station is near Avenida de Salamanca, which suits arrivals from Madrid and Murcia.
Playa de San Juan is a longer, more open beach north of the center. The TRAM links it with Luceros and the coast toward Benidorm, but dinner in town means a ride back. Families with mostly beach days may prefer to stay here.
Spanish and Valencian are both spoken. The old center and seafront are walkable, but Santa Cruz and the castle approach are steep. Take the TRAM to San Juan or along the coast. The C6 bus runs from Alicante–Elche airport to central stops.
Stay in the old town for San Nicolás, Santa María and the castle approach. Santa Cruz climbs the slope below Benacantil, and the lower streets lead to the Explanada and Postiguet. Bars around El Barrio can make nearby rooms noisy.

Postiguet is the city beach beside the castle, close to the marina. The old town and the Explanada are a walk away. The seafront is busier than at Playa de San Juan.

Around Mercado Central or Plaza de los Luceros you have the TRAM and an easy walk to the rail station. The sea is farther away, but trips into town and along the coast start here.

San Juan has a long sandy shore north of central Alicante. The TRAM runs into town and along the Costa Blanca. Pick it for regular beach time, and expect the ride back to the castle and old town.

May and June are warm enough for the beach, before the hottest stretch. In midsummer the waterfront is busy and afternoons climb into the upper 80s °F. For castle walks, March, April and October are gentler, though autumn brings more rain.
Alicante–Elche airport (ALC) is about 7 miles southwest of central Alicante. The main rail station has trains from Madrid, Valencia and Murcia.

Take the C6 airport bus to Puerta del Mar, Mercado Central or Luceros, or a taxi straight to your hotel. The airport has no TRAM stop.
