About Amsterdam

Amsterdam is compact around its canal ring, but a hotel by Centraal, Museumplein or De Pijp still changes the trip. Pick the neighborhood by the sights you came for and the station you will arrive at.

The old centre runs south from Amsterdam Centraal through Dam Square and Nieuwmarkt. The Canal Ring wraps around it, with the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht. Jordaan sits just west of the canals and has small streets, galleries and cafés away from the busiest centre blocks.

The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk all stand on Museumplein, a short walk from Vondelpark. South of the canals, De Pijp has Albert Cuyp Market and a lot of restaurants. Ferries cross the IJ to the EYE Filmmuseum and NDSM wharf in Noord.

Schiphol has its own railway station under the terminal, with trains to Amsterdam Centraal and Zuid. Get off at whichever is closer to your hotel. Trams cover much of the inner city, and metro 52 runs from Noord through Centraal and De Pijp to Zuid.

Bikes fill the streets, and canal bridges and narrow pavements slow you down when you’re pulling a suitcase. Spring and summer have long days. Winter is damp and cool. Work out your route from the station before you decide a canal-side address is close enough.

Where to stay in Amsterdam

  • Centrum and Dam Square

    • First visits
    • Rail arrivals
    • Walking

Between Centraal and Dam Square you walk out of the hotel to the shops, the canal boats and the old centre. These streets stay busy late, and the blocks around the station and Nieuwmarkt get noisy.

Around here: Dam Square, Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam Centraal

  • Canal Ring

    • Canal walks
    • Architecture
    • Central stays

Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht circle the old centre. A canal-side hotel is a walk from the Anne Frank House and most central sights. The catch is luggage over narrow streets and bridges.

Around here: Prinsengracht, Herengracht, Anne Frank House

  • Jordaan

    • Quieter streets
    • Galleries
    • Cafés

West of Prinsengracht, the Jordaan has small streets, galleries and cafés. It is calmer than Dam Square, and the Anne Frank House and Westerkerk are still close. For trips across town, see how far the nearest tram stop is.

    Around here: Westerkerk, Noordermarkt, Brouwersgracht

  • Museum Quarter and Vondelpark

    • Museums
    • Families
    • Park walks

Stay near Museumplein for the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk. Vondelpark is close, and trams run to the centre. Expect residential streets and quiet evenings, not late-night crowds.

Around here: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark

  • De Pijp

    • Food
    • Markets
    • Metro links

De Pijp is cafés and restaurants around Albert Cuyp Market and Sarphatipark, away from the busiest canal streets. Metro 52 at De Pijp station runs to Centraal and Zuid. The market streets get crowded during the day.

Around here: Albert Cuyp Market, Sarphatipark, Ferdinand Bolstraat

  • Amsterdam Noord

    • Modern architecture
    • Waterfront
    • Longer stays

Noord, across the IJ, has the EYE Filmmuseum and NDSM wharf. Ferries run from the waterfront to Centraal, and metro 52 stops farther inland. Before you book here, find out which ferry or metro stop the hotel is near.

Questions about Amsterdam

Where should I look for a late arrival from Schiphol?

Near Centraal or Zuid, which both have direct trains from Schiphol. Pick the one you’ll use and check the final tram or metro leg to the hotel.

Where else can I search if Centrum is full?

Try De Pijp, on metro 52 to Centraal and Zuid. Noord works if the hotel is near the ferry or metro, but check when the last crossing leaves.
