About Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria spans the city beaches of Las Palmas, the dunes of Maspalomas and southwest resort bays. The airport is on the east coast between the capital and the southern hotels, so a room in one resort leaves the rest of the island a drive away.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has Las Canteras beach and the streets of Vegueta and Triana. Stay by Las Canteras for an urban beach and restaurants, or nearer Vegueta for the cathedral and old quarter. The capital is about 16 miles by road from the airport.

On the south coast, Playa del Inglés has a long beach, shops and nightlife around Yumbo. Maspalomas and Meloneras stretch west to the lighthouse and the protected dunes. These resorts are roughly 19 to 22 miles from the airport. The dunes are a landscape to visit, not a shortcut between hotels.

Farther southwest, Puerto Rico and Amadores have sheltered resort beaches. Puerto de Mogán has a marina and a smaller harbour setting. The road trip from the airport grows to about 29 miles for Puerto Rico and 34 miles for Puerto de Mogán.

Agaete is on the northwest coast, with the port of Las Nieves and ferries toward Tenerife. Inland roads climb toward Tejeda and Roque Nublo. A coast hotel is fine for beach days. The mountains need a separate trip and time on winding roads.
