Positano climbs steeply from Spiaggia Grande to Chiesa Nuova and the hill villages. Pick your hotel by how many steps you will take between your room, the beach and the road.
Spiaggia Grande is the ferry landing and the main beach. Santa Maria Assunta and its tiled dome stand just above it, with the Roman archaeological museum under the church. The lanes around Piazza dei Mulini lead down to the shore. A seafront room saves the steep climb back, but it puts you in the busiest foot traffic.
The coastal path west leads to Fornillo, a smaller beach away from the ferry pier. Hotels around Viale Pasitea and Fornillo can have broad sea views, but check the stairs between the entrance and the beach. Chiesa Nuova is higher up by the road and the local bus stops, which is easier when you arrive with luggage.
Arienzo and Laurito are east of the center, beyond the main pedestrian lanes. Stay there for beach time, not for repeated walks into town. Montepertuso and Nocelle are above the coast. Nocelle is the start of the Path of the Gods, but getting back to a beach hotel takes a bus or a long descent.
Positano has no railway station. SITA buses run to Sorrento and Amalfi, and ferries call along the coast in season, though weather can stop them. Parking is scarce along the SS163. Before you book a room high above the shore, ask how luggage reaches the door.

Stay near Piazza dei Mulini or Santa Maria Assunta for the beach and the ferry landing. These lanes are crowded in summer, but you skip a long climb after a day on the water.

Arienzo and Laurito are east of the center, near smaller coves. Montepertuso and Nocelle are inland above town, with walking routes toward the Path of the Gods. For the beach, take a bus or a taxi.

May, June and September are the best months for climbing the steep lanes and reaching the beach. Midsummer is hot, with the busiest ferries and paths. Winter is quiet, but fewer boats run.
Fly to Naples International, then continue by road through Sorrento or along the coast. Positano has no train station. Ferries run in season, and buses are the public link all year.

The slopes over Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo face the bay. Confirm the view from your own room, not just the terrace.
Often, but the lower pedestrian lanes still have steps. Ask where a car can drop bags.
