Santiago de Compostela’s old town gathers around the cathedral and Praza do Obradoiro, the endpoint of the Camino de Santiago. Stay by the square to reach the cathedral early. San Pedro is on the Camino route into town, Alameda has the park, and the Ensanche is closest to transport.
The cathedral faces Praza do Obradoiro, with Praza da Quintana on its eastern side. Rúa do Franco and Rúa do Vilar run through the stone old town toward the Mercado de Abastos. Pilgrims and day visitors share these narrow streets, so wheeled luggage can be awkward over paving and steps.
East of the center, Rúa de San Pedro is a Camino arrival route with cafés and smaller streets. The Museo do Pobo Galego, Galician Contemporary Art Centre and San Domingos de Bonaval park are nearby. The cathedral is still walkable, but the return from the market side climbs.
Alameda park has a view of the cathedral and separates the old town from the Ensanche. Hotels around Praza de Galicia are near the shopping streets but outside the busiest medieval lanes. Farther south, the Intermodal station handles both rail and bus. The walk back up to Obradoiro is uphill.
It rains in Santiago in every season. The driest, warmest months are July and August. Autumn and winter call for waterproofs. You will walk the old town, and line 6A runs between the airport, the city and the Intermodal area.
