Monument Circle is the middle of downtown, with the convention center and stadium to the southwest and Mass Ave’s restaurants to the northeast. Stay downtown on a first visit. Speedway, Broad Ripple and Fountain Square are better when you have a reason to be there.
Monument Circle is the downtown landmark. The Wholesale District has the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium and Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with a large cluster of hotels around them. West of the core, the Central Canal and White River State Park lead to the Eiteljorg Museum, Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis Zoo and Victory Field.
Massachusetts Avenue runs northeast from downtown through theaters, shops and restaurants to the Bottleworks District. Fountain Square lies southeast of the center, with music venues, vintage shops and duckpin bowling around the Fountain Square Theatre Building. Both are good for an evening out. Work out how you’ll get back to the hotel after a late show.
Broad Ripple Village is north of downtown on the Monon Trail. The Red Line bus rapid transit connects it with the center. The Children’s Museum is also north of downtown, while the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is in Speedway to the west. Neither is a short walk from a downtown hotel.
May is race month, with the Indianapolis 500. Spring can be wet, summer afternoons hot and winter cold. Indianapolis International Airport is southwest of downtown, and IndyGo Route 8 runs to the Downtown Transit Center. If you drive, ask about hotel parking charges before you book.
