Prague’s compact historic core spans both banks of the Vltava. From a hotel in Staré Město you walk to the Old Town and Charles Bridge. Malá Strana adds the climb to the Castle. Vinohrady swaps the busiest streets for tram and metro rides.
Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock and Josefov sit on the east bank. Charles Bridge crosses to Malá Strana, where lanes rise toward Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral. These sights are close on a map, but cobbles, steps and crowds slow a day on foot.
Nové Město runs south from Wenceslas Square toward the National Theatre and river. It is handy for the main railway station and for metro changes at Můstek or Muzeum. Vinohrady has residential streets around Náměstí Míru. Karlín has cafés and metro B near Florenc.
Metro lines A, B and C meet the tram network. The airport has no metro station: trolleybus 59 connects to line A at Nádraží Veleslavín, and Airport Express goes to Praha hlavní nádraží. Check the nearest stop and the walk from it, especially with luggage.
Spring and early autumn bring milder walking weather. July and August are warmest, while winter days are cold and short. On the Castle side, plan for hills. Near Old Town Square, expect crowds into the evening.
