About Key West

Key West sits at the end of the Overseas Highway, with Old Town streets, a working seaport and sunset views over the Gulf. Duval Street is the busy spine. Stay a few blocks away and you give up nightlife on the doorstep but sleep better.

Old Town is compact enough for many walks and bike rides. Duval Street links bars and shops with the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum nearby on Whitehead Street. Mallory Square and the Historic Seaport draw sunset crowds to the north waterfront. Stay near Duval if evenings are the main event, but check the exact block for noise.

Bahama Village lies west of Duval, around Petronia Street and the Truman Waterfront. It has a long local history and is quieter than the Duval strip. Truman Annex and Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park are close to the island’s west end. The state park has a beach and a historic fort, with entry rules and hours to check before you go.

For beaches, look at the south shore. Casa Marina and Higgs Beach are near the White Street Pier. Smathers Beach is farther east along South Roosevelt Boulevard. New Town and airport-side hotels have easier road access, but a Duval Street night usually needs a bike, bus, taxi or rideshare.

Key West International Airport is on the east side of the island. Taxis and rideshares meet arrivals, and city transit serves Key West and Stock Island. Winter and spring are milder and drier; late summer and early fall bring more rain. If you drive the Overseas Highway, plan parking before choosing an Old Town hotel.

Questions about Key West

Which Key West beach works for a family day?

Higgs Beach has shallow water and playgrounds. Fort Zachary Taylor has a beach and a historic fort; its rocky bottom calls for water shoes.

Should families stay in Old Town or near Smathers Beach?

Old Town cuts walks to museums and the seaport. A Smathers-area room shortens a beach day but needs transport for Duval Street evenings.

What should I check in a family room?

Confirm the bed layout, occupancy, pool rules and parking for the exact room. A hotel can have several room types with different setups.
