About Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach is a long strip of oceanfront hotels on the Atlantic, with the Boardwalk and the SkyWheel in the middle. Pick your stretch of beach first. The Boardwalk, the northern hotel blocks and the south end each have different outings within reach of the door.

The Boardwalk and Promenade run along the downtown shore past the SkyWheel, arcades and restaurants. Broadway at the Beach is inland, with Ripley’s Aquarium, shops and evening entertainment. A Boardwalk hotel has the beach and downtown on foot, but Broadway is a separate trip.

The farther north you go on Ocean Boulevard, the farther the hotels are from the Boardwalk. The city’s northern end has resorts near the beach, and Grande Dunes and Arcadian Shores are closer to the golf courses. Read the street address carefully. North Myrtle Beach is a separate city farther up the Grand Strand.

South of downtown, Family Kingdom is by the shore and Myrtle Beach State Park has a pier, beach and maritime forest. The Market Common is farther inland on the former Air Force base, with restaurants, shops and a cinema. A south-end hotel is a shorter drive from MYR and the state park, and a longer one from the SkyWheel.

Summers are hot and sticky, with frequent thunderstorms. Spring and fall are milder, and winter is cooler and quieter. Coast RTA buses run along some roads, but the Grand Strand stretches well past the walkable downtown blocks. To get beyond your own stretch of beach, check the bus route or expect to drive or call a rideshare.

Where to stay in Myrtle Beach

  • Boardwalk and downtown

    • First visits
    • Beach walks
    • Nightlife

The SkyWheel, oceanfront promenade and Pier 14 sit by the central beach. Stay here if you want to park the car and walk to the beach and the downtown restaurants. Hotels on the busiest blocks can be noisy. Broadway at the Beach is inland, not on the Boardwalk.

Around here: Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, SkyWheel, Pier 14

  • Central Ocean Boulevard and Convention Center

    • Beachfront rooms
    • Convention trips
    • Aquarium visits

North of the SkyWheel, the oceanfront hotels open onto the beach, and the Convention Center is inland behind them. Broadway at the Beach is closer from here than from the south end. Whether you can walk from an oceanfront room to the aquarium depends on the block.

Around here: Myrtle Beach Convention Center, Broadway at the Beach, Ripley’s Aquarium

  • North end, Grande Dunes and Arcadian Shores

    • Golf trips
    • Resort stays
    • Quieter beach time

Northern Ocean Boulevard has resort hotels away from the Boardwalk crowds. Golfers stay in Grande Dunes and Arcadian Shores, so check the drive to the course you booked. Downtown nights mean a drive, and North Myrtle Beach is farther north again.

Around here: Grande Dunes, Arcadian Shores, Dunes Golf and Beach Club

  • South Ocean Boulevard and Family Kingdom

    • Family trips
    • Beachfront stays
    • Airport arrivals

Family Kingdom stands near the oceanfront hotels south of downtown. Stay here for amusement rides and beach days, with Myrtle Beach State Park farther south. Dinner on the Boardwalk or a trip to Broadway takes longer than from a central room.

Around here: Family Kingdom Amusement Park, Springmaid Pier, Myrtle Beach State Park

  • The Market Common and airport area

    • Longer stays
    • Airport access
    • Dining and errands

The Market Common has shops, restaurants and a cinema on the former Air Force base. MYR and Myrtle Beach State Park are a short drive away. It is inland, though, so the lower rate comes with a trip to the sand.

Around here: The Market Common, Myrtle Beach International Airport, Myrtle Beach State Park

The beach is more comfortable in late spring and in early fall than at the height of summer. Midsummer brings heat, humidity and afternoon storms. September stays warm but is one of the wetter months. Winter is cool, fine for walks on the shore, and some seasonal attractions cut their hours.

Getting to Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) is southwest of downtown. From the terminal, take a taxi, a rideshare, a rental car or a Coast RTA bus. U.S. 17 follows the coast, and U.S. 501 is the main road in from inland. There is no Amtrak service to Myrtle Beach itself.

3 mi from downtown

To Downtown and Boardwalk
A short taxi or rideshare ride, longer in heavy traffic
To The Market Common
A short drive south of the airport. Route 15S also stops there

Taxis and rideshares meet arrivals at the terminal, and there are rental cars and some hotel shuttles. Coast RTA Route 15S stops on Jetport Road. Check its hours, and how close the stop is to your hotel, first.

Other ways to arrive

Car
U.S. 17 runs along the Grand Strand, and U.S. 501 comes in from inland. Parking at beachfront hotels varies, so ask the hotel before you arrive.
Bus
Coast RTA buses cover parts of Myrtle Beach and the towns around it. Look up the route and timetable near your hotel.
Train
Myrtle Beach has no passenger rail station. From the Amtrak stations in Florence and other South Carolina cities, you finish the trip by road.

Questions about Myrtle Beach

Why book free cancellation for a beach trip?

Summer thunderstorms can push a beach day back, and travel plans change. You can move or drop the booking, as long as you do it within the rate’s terms.

Does free cancellation cover every room at a hotel?

No. One room can be refundable and the next not, and booking sites differ too. Read the cutoff time and any conditions before you pay.

Which area should I choose while plans are uncertain?

The Boardwalk is simplest for beach and downtown walks. If you may spend more time at Family Kingdom or the state park, look at the south end instead.
