New Orleans curves around a bend in the Mississippi River, with the French Quarter at its historic core. The music and food reach well beyond the Quarter. Stay in the Quarter to walk everywhere, in the CBD for larger hotels, or by an Uptown streetcar stop for quieter nights.
The French Quarter packs Jackson Square, the French Market, Royal Street and Bourbon Street into a compact grid. Bourbon draws late-night crowds, while blocks near Royal and Chartres have galleries and older buildings. Check the exact block when you book. Two hotels a few streets apart can mean very different nights of sleep.
Across Canal Street, the Central Business District has hotels near theaters and the Superdome. Next door, the Arts and Warehouse District has the National WWII Museum, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the convention center. Both are close to the Quarter without putting you on one of its party streets.
Downriver, the Marigny has Frenchmen Street music venues; Bywater continues toward Crescent Park. Upriver, the Garden District and Uptown follow the St. Charles Avenue streetcar past historic homes, with Magazine Street shops and restaurants on parallel blocks. Mid-City is closer to City Park and the New Orleans Museum of Art via the Canal streetcar.
Spring and fall are better for walking than the hot, humid summer. MSY is west of downtown, in Kenner. RTA Route 202 runs from the airport to Poydras Street. If you’re staying in the French Quarter or Uptown, check where its current stops are.
