About Asheville

Asheville is a Blue Ridge city with a compact downtown, a working arts district beside the French Broad River and the Biltmore Estate south of the center. Base yourself where most of your days will be. For mountain outings you will usually want a car.

Pack Square, the Asheville Art Museum, Grove Arcade and the Basilica of St. Lawrence are all downtown, a few walkable blocks apart. Biltmore Avenue and Lexington Avenue have many of the central restaurants and shops. From a downtown room, dinner is on foot, but ask about parking before you bring a car.

The South Slope, just below downtown, is breweries and murals around Coxe Avenue. West of the center, the River Arts District runs along the French Broad River, with working studios, galleries and a greenway. Studio hours vary, so pick the ones you want before you go. Staying in one district doesn’t put you next door to the other.

Biltmore Village sits at the entrance to the Biltmore Estate, with shops and restaurants on its own streets. Some Village businesses are still reopening in phases, so check their current hours. The estate needs its own ticket, and from a hotel by its entrance, downtown evenings are a drive.

Across the river, West Asheville’s cafés, shops and music rooms line Haywood Road. East of downtown, Tunnel Road is a strip of hotels built around the car. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes the Asheville area, but sections can close for weather or repairs. Check the National Park Service road status before you plan a day around a particular overlook.

Where to stay in Asheville

  • Downtown

    • First visits
    • Walking
    • Restaurants
    • Museums

Pack Square, the Asheville Art Museum, Grove Arcade and the Basilica of St. Lawrence fit into one day on foot. Stay downtown for restaurants and live music after dark. Sort out parking separately, and expect to need a ride to the Biltmore Estate.

Around here: Pack Square, Grove Arcade, Asheville Art Museum

  • South Slope

    • Breweries
    • Nightlife
    • Murals
    • Downtown access

Coxe Avenue and the old warehouse blocks hold breweries, murals and restaurants a short walk south of downtown. Stay here for the breweries. It is not a quiet mountain retreat, and rooms near the busiest blocks can be loud late at night.

Around here: Coxe Avenue, South Slope Mural Trail, Wicked Weed Funkatorium

  • River Arts District

    • Artist studios
    • Galleries
    • Greenway walks
    • Creative trips

Studios and galleries line the French Broad River, with a greenway for a break between visits. Some studios open only by appointment or for events, so check hours one by one. There are fewer hotels here than downtown. Check how far yours really is from the studios.

Around here: French Broad River Greenway, Wedge Studios, NorthLight Studios

  • Biltmore Village and Estate

    • Biltmore visits
    • Historic streets
    • South Asheville
    • Car trips

The Village’s brick streets and shops sit near the Biltmore Estate entrance. Pick this side of town for an estate day or plans in south Asheville. Downtown restaurants are a separate trip. Some Village businesses are still being restored, so check their hours.

Around here: Biltmore Estate, Biltmore Village, All Souls Cathedral

  • West Asheville

    • Neighborhood dining
    • Longer stays
    • Independent shops
    • Local music

Haywood Road has neighborhood cafés, shops and music rooms across the French Broad River from downtown. There are fewer places to stay than in the central hotel districts. Pick one close to the stretch of Haywood Road you want, and plan on a ride to downtown or Biltmore.

Around here: Haywood Road, West Asheville, French Broad River

  • Tunnel Road and East Asheville

    • Road trips
    • Parking
    • East Asheville
    • Parkway drives

Tunnel Road runs east from downtown past chain hotels and the Asheville Mall area. It makes sense for drivers heading out on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Getting back from Pack Square at night means a drive or a bus, not a stroll.

Spring afternoons are mild for downtown walks. Summer is warm, with more rainy days. Autumn draws crowds for the Blue Ridge leaves, and October is usually drier than midsummer. Winter is cooler, and Parkway sections may close in bad weather, so check road status before a mountain drive.
