About Cordoba

Córdoba’s old town is compact: white lanes, patios and riverside walks around the Mezquita-Cathedral. The high-speed railway station is north of the historic core, so pick the monument side for sightseeing and the station side for a quick rail stop.

The Mezquita-Cathedral and its Patio de los Naranjos sit beside the Judería. From there, narrow streets lead to the synagogue, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and the Roman Bridge across the Guadalquivir. Stay in this quarter and the main sights are all close on foot. The lanes are busy by day, and driving access is limited.

San Basilio, also called Alcázar Viejo, is known for its flower-filled patios and lies beside the Alcázar. The Fiesta de los Patios takes place in May. Farther east, Plaza de la Corredera and the Axerquía lead toward Santa Marina and the Palacio de Viana, where you can see courtyards all year. Plaza de las Tendillas is the central shopping and meeting point between those districts and the station.

Córdoba is a useful rail stop between Madrid, Seville and Málaga. The train and bus stations stand next to each other; the Mezquita-Cathedral is farther south through the centre. Medina Azahara, the ruined caliphal city, is outside town. You need a bus or a car to get there from a central hotel.

Plan summer days around the heat. July and August average highs near 99 °F at the airport, with little rain. Visit the Mezquita-Cathedral and riverside early, use midday for shade, and check air conditioning in the exact room. Long walks are more comfortable in spring and autumn. The May patio festival brings extra visitors.

Where to stay in Cordoba

  • Judería and Mezquita-Cathedral

    • First visits
    • Monuments
    • Walking

The Judería wraps around the Mezquita-Cathedral, the synagogue and lanes such as Calleja de las Flores. From here the main sights and the Roman Bridge are the shortest walk. Daytime crowds are heavy and cars are restricted on the narrow streets, so ask where a taxi can drop you.

Around here: Mezquita-Cathedral, Córdoba Synagogue, Calleja de las Flores, Roman Bridge

  • San Basilio and Alcázar Viejo

    • Patio visits
    • Quiet evenings
    • Alcázar access

San Basilio lies southwest of the Mezquita-Cathedral beside the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. Its patios are the focus of the May festival, though some can also be visited at other times. This is quieter than the streets around the Mezquita but still within walking distance of the river.

Around here: Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, Puerta de Sevilla, Caballerizas Reales, San Basilio patios

  • Plaza de las Tendillas and Centro

    • Train and sightseeing balance
    • Shopping
    • Restaurants

Plaza de las Tendillas is Córdoba’s central shopping square. Hotels nearby split the difference between the rail station to the north and the Mezquita-Cathedral to the south. Streets around Cruz Conde are lively and convenient, though rooms on the busiest roads can hear traffic.

Around here: Plaza de las Tendillas, Calle Cruz Conde, Paseo de la Victoria

  • Axerquía and Plaza de la Corredera

    • Patios
    • Local squares
    • Longer stays

East of the main shopping streets, the Axerquía links Plaza de la Corredera with Plaza del Potro, Santa Marina and the Palacio de Viana. Pick it for patios and neighborhood streets away from the Judería. The Mezquita is a longer walk, so check the distance if you have an early entry slot.

Around here: Plaza de la Corredera, Plaza del Potro, Palacio de Viana, Santa Marina

  • Córdoba Central station

    • Early trains
    • Short stopovers
    • Easy luggage arrival

The rail and bus stations sit together north of the historic centre. A hotel nearby is easiest for an early train or a one-night stop. The Mezquita-Cathedral is about 1.2 miles away. Expect wide roads and little old-town feel, and walk through Centro or take a taxi to the sights.
