Florence’s historic center is compact enough to connect the Duomo, Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio on foot. The best hotel district depends on whether you want a station arrival, early museum starts or evenings across the Arno.
The cathedral dome and Giotto’s bell tower dominate the streets around Piazza del Duomo. South toward Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi sits beside the Arno; Ponte Vecchio crosses to the Oltrarno. These landmarks are close together, but cobbled streets and crowds can slow a short walk.
Santa Maria Novella station is on the western edge of the historic center, with direct trains to Rome and Bologna and the T2 tram to Florence Airport. A hotel by the station eases an early departure. San Lorenzo and the Mercato Centrale are close by. Rooms on a busy street can be louder than inner courtyard rooms.
Across the Arno, Santo Spirito and San Frediano have workshops and restaurants, and evenings there feel unlike the Duomo streets. Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens are on this side. Santa Croce, east of the Uffizi, is close to its basilica and local dining, and the center is still walkable.
Florence is hot in July and August, with average afternoon highs around 90 °F at the airport. Spring and early autumn are easier for walking, though rain is more likely than in midsummer. The narrow historic streets are easiest on foot. Drivers should check limited traffic zone rules and hotel parking arrangements before arriving.

The Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and Uffizi form the sightseeing core. Stay here if you want to walk to major museums at opening time. These are the busiest streets, so ask whether a taxi can reach your hotel entrance.

The main station and airport tram make this the simplest area for train-based trips. The basilica and San Lorenzo market are within walking distance, while the Duomo lies farther east through the historic center.
Around here: Firenze Santa Maria Novella station, Santa Maria Novella Basilica, Mercato Centrale
East of the Uffizi, streets around Piazza Santa Croce have restaurants and less of a station feel. The basilica anchors the area, and the Arno and central museums are walkable.
Around here: Basilica of Santa Croce, Piazza Santa Croce, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale
Cross Ponte Vecchio for Palazzo Pitti, the Boboli Gardens and the streets around Piazza Santo Spirito. It suits visitors who like dinner close to their hotel. Allow time for the walk back to the station.
Around here: Palazzo Pitti, Boboli Gardens, Piazza Santo Spirito
Spring and early autumn are comfortable for walking between galleries and across the Arno. July and August bring the hottest afternoons, while late autumn has more rainy days. In busy travel periods, book major museums ahead.
