About San Antonio

San Antonio follows the river from the Alamo and the downtown River Walk to Pearl in the north and the Spanish colonial missions in the south. Stay downtown for the Alamo and the Convention Center, at Pearl for dinners on the Museum Reach, or in Southtown for the King William streets and galleries.

The downtown River Walk winds below street level past restaurants, bridges and boat landings. The Alamo is a short walk east of the river loop. La Villita and Hemisfair are to the south. A room on the busiest river bend puts the sights close but can be noisy in the evening, so check the hotel’s exact river or street address.

North of downtown, the Museum Reach passes the San Antonio Museum of Art on the way to Pearl’s former brewery grounds, restaurants and public spaces. Southtown lies the other way: Blue Star Contemporary, neighborhood cafés and the historic King William streets beyond the central river loop. Pick the side of downtown where you expect to spend your evenings.

Brackenridge Park, the San Antonio Zoo, the Witte Museum and the Japanese Tea Garden fill a family day north of the center. Farther south, Mission Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada are separate sites in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The Mission Reach trail links them, but it is a long way. Bike or drive, or plan a very long walk.

Spring and autumn are more comfortable for long River Walk and mission visits than summer afternoons, when average highs reach about 95°F. San Antonio International Airport lies north of downtown, and VIA Route 5 runs between the terminal and the center. Downtown needs no car for the central sights. The missions, the family parks and the outer districts take more planning.

Questions about San Antonio

Which district suits an upscale San Antonio stay?

The downtown River Walk, close to the boat landings and the Alamo. Pearl feels different, with restaurants on the former brewery grounds and a walk along the Museum Reach.

Is a River Walk view guaranteed at a river hotel?

No. Views vary by room position and category. If a balcony or a river view matters, check the exact room description.

What should I compare at a premium property?

Read the room type, parking terms and cancellation deadline. A Southtown or Pearl hotel also means a longer trip to convention events downtown.
