Savannah’s Historic District climbs from the riverfront into a grid of shaded squares. Stay near River Street for dinner on the water, around Broughton Street to be in the middle of things, or by Forsyth Park for quieter evenings south of the busiest blocks.
Brick streets, historic houses and museums sit around the old city’s squares. From a central hotel you can walk to City Market, the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and the Telfair sites. River Street is down the bluff from the rest of downtown, and the way down is cobbles and steps.
The riverfront is a row of old warehouse buildings turned into shops and restaurants, with Plant Riverside at the west end. A hotel here has the water at the door and busy evenings. Book a few blocks inland and you can still walk the Historic District without sleeping on River Street.
South of the old city, Forsyth Park is the center of the Victorian District. Bull Street carries on into Starland, where local restaurants and creative businesses pull people away from the riverfront. Mornings are slower down here. The catch is the distance to River Street. Walk it if you like, or take a short ride.
Tybee Island is a separate beach trip east of Savannah. The oak avenue at Wormsloe and Bonaventure Cemetery are also too far to walk from downtown. If those are the point of your trip, rent a car or book rides. The free dot shuttle covers downtown only and won’t get you to the coast.
Walking is easier in spring and fall. Summers are steamy and bring more rainy days. The airport, Savannah/Hilton Head International, lies northwest of downtown. CAT Route 3 runs to the downtown transit center, or a taxi or rideshare takes you to the hotel door.
