About A Coruna

A Coruña sits on an Atlantic peninsula. The glazed galleries of the Marina look onto the harbour, and Riazor and Orzán beaches face the open sea. The Roman Tower of Hercules is past the old town, at the peninsula’s northern tip.

Praza de María Pita and the lanes of Cidade Vella form the historic core. Along the harbour, the Marina’s rows of enclosed glass balconies make one long white front. The cruise terminal is on this side of town. San Cristóbal rail station is farther inland.

The seafront turns west around the peninsula to Orzán and Riazor. These are city beaches, not a separate resort, and they come with surf and Atlantic wind. Continue north past Domus and Aquarium Finisterrae to the Tower of Hercules, a working Roman lighthouse and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Summer afternoons are mild, with average highs in the low 70s °F. Winter is wetter, but a light layer is enough to keep walking. Pick the old town for stone lanes and the harbour, or Riazor and Orzán if you want the beach outside the door.

Where to stay in A Coruna

  • Cidade Vella

    • Old town walks
    • History
    • Restaurants

Stone lanes around Praza de Azcárraga lead to the Church of Santiago and the old city walls. Praza de María Pita is close by, and the harbourfront is a short walk. Stay here for the historic core. Riazor and Orzán beaches are across the peninsula.

Around here: Praza de Azcárraga, Church of Santiago, Praza de María Pita

  • Pescadería and Marina

    • Harbour access
    • First visits
    • Nightlife

Pescadería, on the Orzán side of the old town, runs from the arcaded Praza de María Pita to the glass-fronted buildings of Avenida da Mariña. The harbour and old town are both walkable from here. Rooms on the busiest streets get late-night noise.

Around here: Avenida da Mariña, Praza de María Pita, Jardines de Méndez Núñez

  • Riazor and Orzán

    • Beach walks
    • Surf
    • Stadium visits

The two city beaches curve along the Atlantic side of town, with the Paseo Marítimo and Riazor stadium behind them. Orzán is the surf beach. Riazor has the long beachfront walk. The railway station and old town are farther on foot than a beachfront address suggests.

Around here: Praia de Riazor, Praia do Orzán, Estadio de Riazor

  • Monte Alto and Tower of Hercules

    • Lighthouse walks
    • Aquarium
    • Quiet coast

Monte Alto sits north of the old town, close to the Tower of Hercules, Aquarium Finisterrae and the coastal path. Pick it for the lighthouse and the sea air. The rail station is a longer trip from here. The path up to the tower is exposed when the wind is up.

Around here: Tower of Hercules, Aquarium Finisterrae, Domus

  • Ensanche and San Cristóbal

    • Rail arrivals
    • Shopping
    • Longer stays

The early-20th-century Ensanche has shops and broad streets around Juan Flórez. San Cristóbal station is farther south, handy for train arrivals. A room by the station saves a transfer, but the old town, harbour and beaches are then farther away.

Around here: Rúa Juan Flórez, A Coruña–San Cristóbal station, Parque de Santa Margarita

Questions about A Coruna

Is a station deal better than a city-centre one?

Only if trains are most of your plan. The Marina is closer to Praza de María Pita and the harbour.

Can a beach hotel still be a good deal?

Yes, if you’ll spend your days on Riazor or Orzán. Count the ride back to the station on the day you leave.
