About Denver

Denver sits where the High Plains meet the Rocky Mountain foothills. In Lower Downtown, Union Station and Coors Field are close together. Pick RiNo for murals and dinner, or the Golden Triangle to walk to the major art museums.

Lower Downtown, often called LoDo, runs from Union Station toward Coors Field. The station is the terminus of the airport A Line and a hub for other RTD routes. Stay around Wynkoop Street or the 16th Street corridor if you arrive by rail or have a ballgame or a downtown meeting. Event nights get busy.

North of downtown, the River North Art District (RiNo) has murals, galleries and breweries around Larimer and Brighton streets. Five Points lies nearby with its own music and cultural history. The A Line stops at 38th and Blake, but RiNo covers a wide area. Check how far the hotel is from that stop before counting on an easy airport trip.

The Golden Triangle holds the Denver Art Museum, Clyfford Still Museum and History Colorado Center beside Civic Center Park. Capitol Hill extends east from the State Capitol. Cherry Creek North and the shopping center are farther southeast. Their restaurants and shops make for a different kind of stay, and you usually need a drive or a bus to reach Union Station.

City Park has the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. Denver Botanic Gardens sit south of the park near Cheesman Park. Summer days are often hot with afternoon storms; winter can alternate sunshine with snow. Pack for the season and keep foothill or mountain trips separate from a walkable downtown itinerary. Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a separate trip west to Morrison, not a downtown walk.

Where to stay in Denver

  • LoDo and Union Station

    • Airport rail
    • First visits
    • Baseball
    • Restaurants

Stay around Wynkoop Street for the A Line, downtown restaurants and a walk to Coors Field. Union Station is the stop for airport and regional rail. Baseball and concert nights bring crowds to the nearby blocks.

Around here: Denver Union Station, Coors Field, Wynkoop Street

  • RiNo and Five Points

    • Murals
    • Nightlife
    • Breweries
    • Independent dining

RiNo murals and galleries spread along Larimer, Walnut and Brighton streets. The 38th and Blake A Line station is useful on the northern side, but many hotels are not beside it. Choose this area for evening dining and art rather than a short walk to the Golden Triangle museums.

Around here: Larimer Street, 38th and Blake Station, Five Points

  • Golden Triangle and Capitol Hill

    • Museums
    • Architecture
    • Civic Center
    • Arts trips

The Denver Art Museum and Clyfford Still Museum sit near Civic Center Park, with the State Capitol just east. Stay here for museum days and civic events. Union Station is farther away, so check bus routes or allow for a longer walk with luggage.

  • Cherry Creek

    • Shopping
    • Dining
    • Upscale stays
    • Long weekends

Cherry Creek North boutiques and the shopping center anchor this southeast district, and the Botanic Gardens are nearby. It is less walkable than LoDo. Plan on a car or rideshare to reach airport rail or a ballgame.

  • City Park and Uptown

    • Families
    • Park time
    • Science museum
    • Local dining

The Denver Zoo and the Museum of Nature & Science share City Park, one large green space. Uptown’s 17th Avenue dining corridor is closer to downtown. Families on museum days do well here, but check the exact address before counting on a walk to either park or Union Station.

Amtrak trains stop at Denver Union Station, close to LoDo hotels and downtown transit.
Car
I-25 runs north–south and I-70 crosses the metro area east–west. Parking charges can change the value of a central hotel.
Transit
RTD rail and buses serve central districts, but foothill excursions and some southeast neighborhoods need more planning.

Questions about Denver

How do I judge a Denver hotel offer?

Add the trip to your main district to the total cost. For an A Line arrival and a night at Coors Field, a LoDo room cuts the transport.

Should I look outside downtown for a deal?

Yes if RiNo restaurants or Cherry Creek shopping anchor the visit. Check the actual address and the ride back from late evening plans.

Can parking change the better rate?

Yes. Central hotels may charge for parking. Count it when you compare a downtown room with one near an RTD stop.
