Los Angeles runs from Downtown and Hollywood west to the Pacific. Book near the part of the city you'll spend the most time in. A short hop on the map can still mean a long cross-town trip.
The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Little Tokyo and Union Station are close together Downtown. Metro rail runs from here to Hollywood, Santa Monica and Pasadena. The Arts District, east of Little Tokyo, has galleries and restaurants, but its blocks are more spread out than the civic center.
A Hollywood hotel keeps the Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre and the Metro B Line close. Griffith Observatory is up in Griffith Park above Los Feliz, not on Hollywood Boulevard, so plan a separate trip up the hill. West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are farther west, where you rely more on buses or rideshares.
Santa Monica and Venice are on the coast, well west of central Los Angeles. Santa Monica has the pier and the end of the E Line. Venice has the boardwalk and canals but no rail stop near the beach. The coast runs cooler than inland, especially when the morning marine layer hangs around.
LA has several centers, and no single hotel is close to all of them. Summer and early fall are dry and warm inland; most rain falls in winter. Before you book, check how far the hotel is from your main plans and the nearest Metro stop, and what it charges for parking. Two LA addresses can mean very different trips.
