About Los Angeles

Los Angeles runs from Downtown and Hollywood west to the Pacific. Book near the part of the city you'll spend the most time in. A short hop on the map can still mean a long cross-town trip.

The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Little Tokyo and Union Station are close together Downtown. Metro rail runs from here to Hollywood, Santa Monica and Pasadena. The Arts District, east of Little Tokyo, has galleries and restaurants, but its blocks are more spread out than the civic center.

A Hollywood hotel keeps the Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre and the Metro B Line close. Griffith Observatory is up in Griffith Park above Los Feliz, not on Hollywood Boulevard, so plan a separate trip up the hill. West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are farther west, where you rely more on buses or rideshares.

Santa Monica and Venice are on the coast, well west of central Los Angeles. Santa Monica has the pier and the end of the E Line. Venice has the boardwalk and canals but no rail stop near the beach. The coast runs cooler than inland, especially when the morning marine layer hangs around.

LA has several centers, and no single hotel is close to all of them. Summer and early fall are dry and warm inland; most rain falls in winter. Before you book, check how far the hotel is from your main plans and the nearest Metro stop, and what it charges for parking. Two LA addresses can mean very different trips.

Where to stay in Los Angeles

  • Downtown and Little Tokyo

    • Museums
    • Concerts
    • Rail connections
    • Business trips

The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Grand Central Market and Little Tokyo are all on or near the central grid, and Union Station has Metro, Amtrak and Metrolink trains. Check the exact block before booking. Walking distances add up, and some streets feel very different after dark.

Around here: The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Grand Central Market, Union Station

  • Hollywood and Los Feliz

    • Film landmarks
    • Metro B Line
    • Nightlife
    • Griffith Park visits

Hollywood Boulevard has the Walk of Fame and TCL Chinese Theatre, with B Line stations at Hollywood/Highland and Hollywood/Vine. Los Feliz is closer to Griffith Park and its observatory. A hotel on the boulevard keeps the tourist sights close but can be busy at night. From either one, the observatory is still a trip up the hill.

Around here: Hollywood Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre, Griffith Observatory

  • Santa Monica and Venice

    • Beach days
    • Pier visits
    • Coastal walks
    • Outdoor dining

Santa Monica has the pier, beach and an E Line station near Third Street Promenade. Venice is farther south, with Ocean Front Walk, Abbot Kinney Boulevard and canals. Stay here for the beach. Downtown and Hollywood are long cross-town rides away, and Venice has no rail stop by the shore.

Around here: Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Venice Canals, Third Street Promenade

  • Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and Westwood

    • Westside dining
    • Shopping
    • UCLA visits
    • Longer stays

West Hollywood is closer to the Sunset Strip and the restaurants on Santa Monica Boulevard than any Downtown hotel. Beverly Hills centers on Rodeo Drive, and Westwood is next to UCLA and the Hammer Museum. Rail access varies from street to street here, and parking costs add up.

Around here: Sunset Strip, Rodeo Drive, UCLA, Hammer Museum

  • Miracle Mile and Koreatown

    • Museums
    • Korean dining
    • Wilshire corridor
    • Transit access

Miracle Mile has LACMA, the Academy Museum and La Brea Tar Pits along Wilshire Boulevard. Koreatown is farther east, with restaurants and D Line stops heading toward Downtown. Pick the end of Wilshire that fits your plans. Staying by the museums won't put you near the beach.

Getting to Los Angeles

Most long-distance flights land at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Airport shuttles run to the LAX/Metro Transit Center for the C and K Lines, and FlyAway buses go straight from the terminals to Union Station, where Amtrak and Metrolink also stop.

To Downtown
FlyAway bus to Union Station; allow extra time for road traffic
To Santa Monica
C and K Line connections or a taxi/rideshare; check current Metro routing

A free shuttle runs from the terminals to the LAX/Metro Transit Center for the C and K Lines. The FlyAway bus goes to Union Station. For coastal and Westside hotels, a taxi or rideshare saves changing trains.

Other ways to arrive

Train
Amtrak and Metrolink trains arrive at Union Station, which connects to Metro rail and buses.
Metro
The E Line links Downtown and Santa Monica; the B Line links Downtown with Hollywood and North Hollywood. Check the station nearest your hotel.
Car
I-5, US-101, I-10 and I-405 cross the region. Traffic and hotel parking can cancel out the saving on a cheaper room.

Questions about Los Angeles

Which LA area works for a family trip?

Hollywood and Los Feliz are close to Griffith Park. Downtown has the museums and the trains, and Santa Monica has the pier and beach. Pick the area for the outings you'll repeat.

Can families reach the beach by Metro?

The E Line ends in Santa Monica near the pier. Venice Beach has no rail stop, so you need a local bus, a bike or a car to get there.

What should I check when booking a family room?

Confirm the bed layout, occupancy, breakfast and parking for the exact room. A hotel calling itself family friendly doesn't mean every room has the same setup.
