About Miami

Miami is a warm, Spanish-and-English city on Biscayne Bay, with high-rise Brickell on the mainland and the Art Deco hotels and Atlantic beaches of Miami Beach just across the causeways.

Mainland Miami sits on the west side of Biscayne Bay. Downtown and Brickell form the high-rise core, with banks along Brickell Avenue, the free Metromover looping between the towers, and Bayfront Park on the water. South of downtown, Coconut Grove and Coral Gables are greener and quieter, with shady streets, older homes and the University of Miami.

Miami Beach is a separate city on a barrier island across the bay. When people say they are going to Miami for the beach, they usually mean South Beach, its southern end. South Beach has the world's largest collection of Art Deco buildings, a long public beach and clubs that stay open until about 5 a.m. North of 23rd Street, Mid-Beach and North Beach are calmer, with big resort hotels along Collins Avenue.

Latin America shapes daily life here. About 70% of city residents identified as Hispanic or Latino in the 2020 census, Miami has the largest Cuban-American population share of any U.S. city, and Spanish is heard as often as English. Little Havana, west of downtown, is the best-known Latin neighborhood, and its Calle Ocho street festival in March is free to attend.

Winters are dry and warm, with daytime highs in the mid-70s °F. From May to October it is hot and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. You can manage without a car in Downtown, Brickell and South Beach, but Key Biscayne, the Design District and day trips are much easier by car. If you drive, check what your hotel charges for parking before you book.

Where to stay in Miami

  • South Beach

    • Beach days
    • Nightlife
    • Art Deco architecture
    • First-time visitors

South Beach is the stretch of Miami Beach from South Pointe Park up to about 23rd Street. This is the Art Deco District, with pastel hotels on Ocean Drive, the beach and promenade at Lummus Park, and the pedestrian blocks of Lincoln Road and Española Way. It is walkable and close to the action, but it can be noisy, crowded and expensive, and rooms in the old Art Deco buildings are often small. Clubs on Washington Avenue and Ocean Drive keep going until around 5 a.m.

Around here: Ocean Drive, Lummus Park, Lincoln Road, South Pointe Park

  • Mid-Beach and North Beach

    • Oceanfront resorts
    • Quieter beach stays
    • Families
    • Couples

Mid-Beach runs from 23rd to 63rd Street, and North Beach continues from there to the top of the island. Collins Avenue is lined with large oceanfront resorts, including the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc, plus mid-century buildings in the Collins Waterfront Architectural District. It is quieter than South Beach and a good choice if you want the ocean without the club noise. Expect to take a bus, taxi or car to South Beach for dinner and bars.

Around here: Collins Avenue, Fontainebleau, Collins Waterfront Architectural District, North Shore Park

  • Downtown and Brickell

    • Business travel
    • No car needed
    • City views
    • Easy airport access

Downtown is Miami's business district, and Brickell, just south of it, is the finance hub, packed with glass towers and luxury hotels. Brickell is quieter than South Beach and about 15 minutes from it by car. The free Metromover and two Metrorail stops make this the easiest base without a car, and the airport is about 15 minutes away on the Orange Line. Brickell has restaurants and bars around Mary Brickell Village, but parts of the downtown core are empty at night.

Around here: Bayfront Park, Brickell Key, Mary Brickell Village, Kaseya Center

  • Coconut Grove

    • Quiet stays
    • Couples
    • Long stays
    • Bayfront walks

Coconut Grove sits on Biscayne Bay south of downtown, with tree-lined streets, galleries, bars and a marina at Dinner Key. Vizcaya, James Deering's Italian-style estate with bayfront gardens, is here. The neighborhood has its own Metrorail station, so downtown is an easy ride, but the beach is a drive away. Some streets have no sidewalks, so take care walking after dark.

Around here: Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Barnacle Historic State Park, Dinner Key, CocoWalk

  • Coral Gables

    • Families
    • University visits
    • Quiet stays
    • Near the airport

Coral Gables is a separate planned city just south of downtown and close to the airport. It has quiet residential streets, the University of Miami and Miracle Mile for shops and restaurants. A free trolley runs along Ponce de Leon Boulevard to the Douglas Road Metrorail station. It suits families, university visits and trips with business near the airport, but you will drive to the beach.

Around here: Biltmore Hotel, Venetian Pool, Miracle Mile, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Getting to Miami

Most visitors fly into Miami International (MIA), just west of the city, or Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood (FLL), about 21 miles north. Brightline trains and I-95 link Miami with the rest of Florida's east coast.

MIAMiami International Airport

6 mi from downtown

To Downtown
About 15 minutes on Metrorail
To South Beach
Roughly 30 minutes by taxi in light traffic, longer at rush hour or by bus

The free MIA Mover runs from the terminals to the Miami Intermodal Center. From there, the Metrorail Orange Line goes to Downtown and Brickell, and also stops in Coconut Grove and near Coral Gables. For Miami Beach, the 150 Airport Flyer bus runs from the Intermodal Center to South Beach. Taxis charge flat rates to Miami Beach by zone, and Tri-Rail trains run north toward Fort Lauderdale.

FLLFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport

To Downtown
25 to 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic
To South Beach
About 40 minutes by shuttle or car, depending on traffic

A free shuttle runs to the Tri-Rail station at Dania Beach, and Tri-Rail goes south to Miami International Airport, where you can change to Metrorail. Brightline's Fort Lauderdale station also has an airport shuttle, with trains to MiamiCentral in downtown Miami. Flights into FLL are often cheaper than into MIA.

Brightline runs from Orlando International Airport via West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale to MiamiCentral station in downtown Miami, which connects to Metrorail and Metromover.
Amtrak
The Silver Meteor and Silver Star run daily from New York via Washington, D.C. and Orlando. The Miami station is on NW 37th Avenue, northwest of downtown, so plan on a taxi to your hotel.
Car
I-95 runs down the Atlantic coast and ends in Miami. Florida's Turnpike (a toll road) is the usual route from Orlando, I-75 comes across from the Gulf coast, and U.S. 1 continues south through the Keys. From I-95, I-395 crosses Biscayne Bay to South Beach.
Bus
Greyhound, FlixBus and other carriers connect Miami with Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville and other Florida cities, and some continue to Key West.

Questions about Miami

What is the cheapest hotel price in Miami right now?

The cheapest rooms start from $55 a night. Prices change daily and depend on your dates, so tap a hotel above to see today's prices.

Where can I find cheaper hotels than South Beach?

South Beach is often noisy, crowded and expensive. Rates can be lower in Mid-Beach and North Beach (north of 23rd Street), around the airport, and in Coral Gables. Compare a few areas on Hotels70 and factor in the cost of getting to the beach.

Are there extra fees on top of the room rate?

Usually, yes. Taxes are added to every booking, and some hotels add a service charge or resort fee. If you are driving, garage or valet parking can add a lot to a cheap rate. Check the full price and the hotel's fee details before you book.

When are Miami hotels cheapest?

Prices are highest in the winter high season, roughly November to April, when rooms are scarcer. They tend to drop from May to October, when it is hot and rainy and hurricane season is underway. Avoid big event weeks like Art Basel in early December and the March music festivals if price is your priority.

Is a cheap hotel near the airport a good idea?

It can be, especially for a short stay or an early flight. The Metrorail Orange Line gets you from the airport to downtown in about 15 minutes. The beach is farther, so if you plan to spend most days in South Beach, the savings may be eaten up by taxis.

Does South Beach have hostels?

Yes. South Beach has hostels with dorm beds, which are often the cheapest way to stay near the beach. Expect shared rooms and a lively crowd.
