Naples runs from the tight streets of Spaccanapoli to the seafront below Vomero. Choose by the trips you will make: churches and museums in the old center, trains from Piazza Garibaldi, or evenings by the bay.
The UNESCO-listed historic center is built around Via dei Tribunali and Spaccanapoli. San Gregorio Armeno, the Duomo and the Cappella Sansevero are close on the map, but the narrow lanes are always busy. You sleep among churches, workshops and pizzerias, so ask about street noise and taxi access.
Napoli Centrale and the Piazza Garibaldi metro station share Piazza Garibaldi. Stay nearby for early trains to Rome, Pompeii or Sorrento. The area is practical, not pretty. For a quieter evening, head west to the Centro Storico or Toledo.
Via Toledo and the Quartieri Spagnoli link the old center to Piazza del Plebiscito and the seafront. Chiaia and Via Partenope face the bay near Castel dell’Ovo. A room by the water saves a long cross-town ride after dinner, but the station is farther away.
Vomero is the hill above the center, with Castel Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino. Funiculars run down to the lower neighborhoods. Capodichino averages in the upper 80s °F in midsummer. November is wetter, so keep a few indoor museums in reserve.
