Alghero has a walled seaside old town and a long sandy shore to the north. The bastions are for late dinners and historic lanes. The Lido is for beach mornings without a drive.
The old town sits on a headland above the harbor. Walk from the Cathedral of Santa Maria through the lanes to the sea-facing bastions and Torre di Sulis. Restaurants and evening promenades cluster here. The streets are narrow, car access is limited and the sand is a longer walk than from a Lido address.
Via Garibaldi follows the bay from the marina toward San Giovanni and the Lido. Maria Pia lies farther north beside a pinewood. These beach districts have room for waterfront hotels and easy access to the sand. The old-town gates are a walk or bus ride away.
Fertilia is near the airport and the northern beaches. Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto sit beyond it, and Porto Conte and Capo Caccia are a longer outing. Neptune's Grotto lies below the cape, reached by boat or by the cliff stairway when conditions permit. Keep the car or bus timetable in mind on that coast.
The sea moderates winter, and July and August are dry and warm. May, June and September are better for walks around the bastions and for beach time. The airport bus ends at Via Catalogna. From there, roll your luggage toward the old town or take a bus north to the Lido.
