About Alghero

Alghero has a walled seaside old town and a long sandy shore to the north. The bastions are for late dinners and historic lanes. The Lido is for beach mornings without a drive.

The old town sits on a headland above the harbor. Walk from the Cathedral of Santa Maria through the lanes to the sea-facing bastions and Torre di Sulis. Restaurants and evening promenades cluster here. The streets are narrow, car access is limited and the sand is a longer walk than from a Lido address.

Via Garibaldi follows the bay from the marina toward San Giovanni and the Lido. Maria Pia lies farther north beside a pinewood. These beach districts have room for waterfront hotels and easy access to the sand. The old-town gates are a walk or bus ride away.

Fertilia is near the airport and the northern beaches. Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto sit beyond it, and Porto Conte and Capo Caccia are a longer outing. Neptune's Grotto lies below the cape, reached by boat or by the cliff stairway when conditions permit. Keep the car or bus timetable in mind on that coast.

The sea moderates winter, and July and August are dry and warm. May, June and September are better for walks around the bastions and for beach time. The airport bus ends at Via Catalogna. From there, roll your luggage toward the old town or take a bus north to the Lido.

Where to stay in Alghero

  • Old town and bastions

    • First visits
    • Evening walks
    • Historic lanes

Stay by the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Piazza Civica and the sea walls for dinner and sunset walks close to your room. The lanes are tight and some streets restrict cars, so ask the hotel where a taxi can leave you. The sandy Lido is farther north.

Around here: Cathedral of Santa Maria, Piazza Civica, Torre di Sulis, Bastioni Marco Polo

  • Harbor and Via Catalogna

    • Airport bus
    • Marina
    • Short stays

The marina and Via Catalogna sit between the old-town gates and the airport bus terminus. This side is handy after a flight or boat trip, with the Bastioni and the waterfront walk nearby. If a quiet night matters, ask about the block.

Around here: Porto di Alghero, Via Catalogna, Giardini Pubblici Giuseppe Manno

  • Lido San Giovanni

    • Beach mornings
    • Waterfront hotels
    • Families

Pick Via Garibaldi or the Lido waterfront for a sandy beach across the road and an easy walk toward the marina. Summer traffic and beachfront activity carry into the evening, and old-town dinners mean a longer way back.

Around here: Spiaggia di San Giovanni, Via Garibaldi, Lido di Alghero

  • Maria Pia and Pietraia

    • Pinewood beach
    • Rail trips
    • Longer stays

Maria Pia has sand and a pinewood north of the Lido. Pietraia, inland by Alghero Sant'Agostino station, suits trains to Sassari. Neither has the old-town lanes outside the door, so pick by beach time or rail plans.

Around here: Spiaggia di Maria Pia, Pineta di Maria Pia, Alghero Sant’Agostino station

  • Fertilia and Porto Conte

    • Airport access
    • Northern beaches
    • Driving trips

Fertilia shortens the trip from AHO and sits nearer Le Bombarde, Lazzaretto and Porto Conte. A car helps for the spread-out beaches and Capo Caccia. Expect a separate bus or road trip to reach the old town.
