About Palermo

Palermo’s old streets run from the Norman Palace and cathedral to Quattro Canti and the seafront. Stay inside the historic centre for churches and markets, near Politeama for the airport bus, or in Mondello for the beach.

The four old quarters meet at Quattro Canti. Albergheria holds Ballarò market and the Norman Palace. Capo has its own market north of the cathedral. The streets are narrow, noisy and uneven. Before booking in the centre, find out where a taxi can drop you.

Kalsa leads toward Piazza Marina, the waterfront and the Orto Botanico. Around La Cala, the old harbour is close to restaurants and the Foro Italico promenade. North of the historic core, Politeama and Via Libertà have wider streets, shops and airport coach stops.

Mondello is Palermo's sandy beach district, away from the old centre. Choose it for sea days, not cathedral walks. Monte Pellegrino separates the city from parts of the northern coast, so a beach day from a central hotel is a separate outing by bus.

The Arab-Norman monuments include the Palatine Chapel, Palermo Cathedral and La Martorana. The same UNESCO listing continues to Monreale and Cefalù, but those are separate trips. In summer, do the exposed palace and market walks early. Boccadifalco averages reach about 88 °F in August.

  • Albergheria and Norman Palace

    • Norman monuments
    • Market mornings

  • Capo and Cathedral

    • Cathedral visits
    • Street food
    • Historic walks

Around here: Cattedrale di Palermo, Mercato del Capo, Teatro Massimo

  • Kalsa and waterfront

    • Waterfront walks
    • Gardens
    • Longer stays

Kalsa reaches Piazza Marina, the Orto Botanico and Foro Italico. Pick it for evening walks toward the sea and the old harbour. The Norman Palace is across the historic centre.

  • Politeama and Via Libertà

    • Airport coach
    • Shopping

  • Mondello

    • Beach stays
    • Swimming

Getting to Palermo

Falcone Borsellino Airport is west of Palermo. Regional trains run from the airport to Notarbartolo and Centrale. The Prestia e Comandè coach stops near Politeama and the central station.

PMOFalcone Borsellino Airport

22 mi from downtown

To Palermo Centrale
About 35 minutes on a Genio Express service; other trains take longer
To Politeama
About 40 minutes by airport coach

The airport rail station is below the terminal. Trains serve Notarbartolo and Palermo Centrale, and the Prestia e Comandè coach stops at Politeama and the central station. Check the timetable after a late flight.

Other ways to arrive

Train
Palermo Centrale is the main rail station for journeys across Sicily, including services toward Cefalù and Catania.
Ferry
The port has passenger links to mainland Italy and other Mediterranean destinations. The old harbour and cruise area are north of the historic centre.
Bus
City buses connect central Palermo with Mondello. Look up the route before booking a beach hotel for a city visit.
Car
The A19 runs to Catania. In the historic streets, traffic limits and parking make a car a poor choice for old-centre sightseeing.

Questions about Palermo

What makes a Palermo hotel a good deal?

The journeys it adds. A Politeama room saves a transfer from the airport coach, and a Kalsa room saves repeated trips into the old centre.

Is Mondello cheaper than central Palermo?

It depends on dates and room type. If most plans are around the Norman Palace and Ballarò, add the daily trip from Mondello.

Where can I look beyond the busiest old streets?

Try Politeama or the streets toward Via Libertà. The airport bus stops nearby, and the historic core is a longer walk south.
