Palermo’s old streets run from the Norman Palace and cathedral to Quattro Canti and the seafront. Stay inside the historic centre for churches and markets, near Politeama for the airport bus, or in Mondello for the beach.
The four old quarters meet at Quattro Canti. Albergheria holds Ballarò market and the Norman Palace. Capo has its own market north of the cathedral. The streets are narrow, noisy and uneven. Before booking in the centre, find out where a taxi can drop you.
Kalsa leads toward Piazza Marina, the waterfront and the Orto Botanico. Around La Cala, the old harbour is close to restaurants and the Foro Italico promenade. North of the historic core, Politeama and Via Libertà have wider streets, shops and airport coach stops.
Mondello is Palermo's sandy beach district, away from the old centre. Choose it for sea days, not cathedral walks. Monte Pellegrino separates the city from parts of the northern coast, so a beach day from a central hotel is a separate outing by bus.
The Arab-Norman monuments include the Palatine Chapel, Palermo Cathedral and La Martorana. The same UNESCO listing continues to Monreale and Cefalù, but those are separate trips. In summer, do the exposed palace and market walks early. Boccadifalco averages reach about 88 °F in August.
