Trento is a valley town on the Adige, with frescoed Renaissance streets, a castle, a science museum and mountain views. From a central hotel, Piazza Duomo and the station are both a short walk. Le Albere is the closer base for museum visits.
Piazza Duomo is the centre of the old town. The Cathedral of San Vigilio, Neptune Fountain and Palazzo Pretorio face the square, and Via Belenzani runs north past painted palaces. The Castello del Buonconsiglio is just past the north end of the centre. Its Torre Aquila holds the medieval Cycle of Months frescoes.
Trento station is less than a ten-minute walk from Piazza Duomo. Trains follow the Brenner line north to Bolzano and south to Verona, so a room near the station is good for day trips. It is easy with luggage, but it feels less like the old town than the streets around the cathedral.
Southwest of the centre, the Le Albere district and the MUSE science museum are near the Adige. Across the river, Piedicastello has the Gallerie history museum and the lower station of the Sardagna cable car. The cable car climbs to a viewpoint over the city. Check that it is running before you plan around it.
Summers in the valley are warm and winters cold. The hills above town have their own weather. Walk the city in spring or autumn, and pack for rain. The A22 motorway reaches Trento, but the historic centre is small and easier on foot.
