Bolzano is an arcaded old town in the South Tyrol valleys. Stay by Piazza Walther for museums and cafés, near the station for trains and the Renon cable car, or in Gries, across the Talvera, for quieter streets.
Piazza Walther is between the cathedral and Bolzano station. The Via dei Portici runs west through the medieval trading streets toward Piazza delle Erbe. Carry on along Via Museo to the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, where Ötzi is on display. From a central hotel you walk to all of these, but the streets are busy with shoppers and visitors.
Across the Talvera is Gries, with the Muri-Gries abbey and the residential blocks around Piazza Gries. The river paths and lawns are a good break from the old town. From a Gries room, the station is a longer walk or a bus ride. Rencio, east of the rail tracks, leads toward the St. Magdalena vineyards and is even less central.
Bolzano is a rail junction on the Brenner route between Verona and Innsbruck. The Renon cable car leaves close to the station for Soprabolzano, where a small railway continues across the plateau. Castel Roncolo, north of the center along the Talvera, is a separate outing, not a walk from the main hotel streets.
Summer afternoons in the valley can be hot, with July highs around 86 °F. Winter mornings often drop below freezing. Late spring and the first weeks of autumn are the best times for long walks in town and cable car trips. The plateau is higher and cooler than the center, so check its forecast separately.

The cathedral, Via dei Portici, Piazza delle Erbe and the Archaeology Museum are all a few minutes apart. Stay here on a first visit or for the museums. The market and shopping streets get busy, so if you want quiet, ask for a room that doesn’t face the street.
Around here: Piazza Walther, Via dei Portici, South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology
The blocks around the station, east of Piazza Walther, are closest to the trains and the Renon cable car. Stay here for day trips north or south and an early start up to the plateau. The old town’s restaurants and museums are a walk west.
Around here: Bolzano/Bozen station, Renon cable car, Piazza Walther
Across the Talvera, Gries has Muri-Gries abbey, local streets and the river paths. It is calmer than the arcades around Piazza Walther, but the station and Renon cable car are farther away.
Around here: Muri-Gries abbey, Piazza Gries, Talvera promenades
Rencio is east of the station, below the St. Magdalena vineyards and away from the busy center. It works best with a car or a bus route you have already looked up. Find out how long the walk back from Piazza Walther is before you book.
Around here: St. Magdalena, Rencio, Renon cable car
Bolzano Sud is close to the fairgrounds, the airport and the A22. Stay there for an event or an early flight. Piazza Walther and the museums are a train or bus ride away.
Around here: Fiera Bolzano, Bolzano Sud station, Bolzano Airport
Walk the arcades and river paths between mid-spring and June, or in early autumn, when the weather is comfortable. July and August are hot in the valley and cooler up on the Renon plateau. Winter has cold mornings and the Christmas market on Piazza Walther. Check that the cable cars are running before a mountain trip.
Arrive by train if you can: Bolzano/Bozen station is on the Brenner line. The small local airport has few routes. Verona Airport has more, and from there you take a bus to Verona Porta Nuova and a train north.

Yes. The old town is compact, the Renon cable car is near the station, and city buses cover Gries and Bolzano Sud. A car only helps for the outlying valleys.
