About Bolzano

Bolzano is an arcaded old town in the South Tyrol valleys. Stay by Piazza Walther for museums and cafés, near the station for trains and the Renon cable car, or in Gries, across the Talvera, for quieter streets.

Piazza Walther is between the cathedral and Bolzano station. The Via dei Portici runs west through the medieval trading streets toward Piazza delle Erbe. Carry on along Via Museo to the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, where Ötzi is on display. From a central hotel you walk to all of these, but the streets are busy with shoppers and visitors.

Across the Talvera is Gries, with the Muri-Gries abbey and the residential blocks around Piazza Gries. The river paths and lawns are a good break from the old town. From a Gries room, the station is a longer walk or a bus ride. Rencio, east of the rail tracks, leads toward the St. Magdalena vineyards and is even less central.

Bolzano is a rail junction on the Brenner route between Verona and Innsbruck. The Renon cable car leaves close to the station for Soprabolzano, where a small railway continues across the plateau. Castel Roncolo, north of the center along the Talvera, is a separate outing, not a walk from the main hotel streets.

Summer afternoons in the valley can be hot, with July highs around 86 °F. Winter mornings often drop below freezing. Late spring and the first weeks of autumn are the best times for long walks in town and cable car trips. The plateau is higher and cooler than the center, so check its forecast separately.
