About Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is a long island, so the choice of coast matters. Corralejo sits by the northern dunes and the Lanzarote ferry. Caleta de Fuste is close to the airport. Costa Calma and Morro Jable are far to the south on the road to Jandía.

Corralejo has a town centre, harbour and access to the dune beaches. West of it, El Cotillo is a smaller fishing village with sheltered coves on one side and surf beaches on the other.

Caleta de Fuste wraps around Playa del Castillo near Fuerteventura Airport. The short airport transfer is a plus for a brief stay, but the island's wildest beaches are elsewhere.

South of the isthmus, Costa Calma is the gateway to the broad sand and tidal lagoons at Sotavento. Morro Jable sits farther down the Jandía peninsula beside Playa del Matorral and the ferry port.

Inland, Betancuria is the former capital, and the road to Ajuy crosses a much quieter landscape. The exposed Cofete coast needs a separate drive. Buses link the main settlements, but the island is long, so pick your base carefully.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura

  • Corralejo

    • Dunes
    • Ferry
    • Restaurants

About 23 miles north of FUE. Ferries leave for Playa Blanca on Lanzarote, and the dunes lie south of town. It has the busiest northern resort streets. Reaching the Jandía beaches takes a long cross-island drive.

Around here: Parque Natural de Corralejo, Corralejo port, Isla de Lobos

  • Caleta de Fuste

    • Short transfer
    • Sheltered bay
    • Golf

About 5 miles south of FUE. Playa del Castillo curves around a sheltered bay, and the resort has hotels and golf courses nearby. Corralejo's dunes and the southern Jandía beaches are separate outings.

Around here: Playa del Castillo, Puerto Castillo, Salinas del Carmen

  • Costa Calma

    • Southern beaches
    • Sotavento
    • Watersports

About 40 miles south of FUE. The resort sits at the start of Sotavento's broad tidal sands and windsurf areas. It is nearer Morro Jable than Corralejo, but the airport transfer is much longer than Caleta de Fuste's.

Around here: Playa de Costa Calma, Playa de Sotavento, La Pared

  • Morro Jable

    • Jandía beaches
    • Ferry
    • Long stay

About 52 miles from FUE at the southern end of the Jandía peninsula. Playa del Matorral stretches beside the resort and ferries use the port. Choose it for the south. A day trip to Corralejo is not realistic.

Around here: Playa del Matorral, Faro de Morro Jable, Morro Jable port

  • El Cotillo

    • Village stay
    • Northwest beaches
    • Surf

About 27 miles northwest of FUE. La Concha has shallow water on the north side, while the open Atlantic surf lies south of town at Piedra Playa. The village is smaller and quieter than Corralejo.

Around here: Playa de la Concha, Faro del Tostón, Piedra Playa

Questions about Fuerteventura

Which resort is simplest with small children?

Caleta de Fuste. Its bay is sheltered and it is about 5 miles from FUE. Ask about the room's beds and the pool depth.

Are Corralejo and Jandía easy to combine from one hotel?

No. They sit at opposite ends of the island. Split the stay or choose one coast to avoid long drives with children.
