Tarragona pairs a Roman amphitheatre above the Mediterranean with a lived-in Catalan city. Choose between the hilltop Part Alta, central Rambla Nova, the fishing quarter and the beaches east of town.
The UNESCO-listed remains of Tarraco run through today’s streets. The walls and circus are near the Part Alta, and the amphitheatre looks over the coast. The cathedral crowns the old quarter. From a central room you can walk to much of it.
Rambla Nova runs down to the Balcó del Mediterrani, and the Mercat Central is near Plaça Corsini. It is the practical middle ground for restaurants, shops and buses, with fewer steep lanes than the old town.
El Serrallo keeps its port character and seafood tables. For a swim, Miracle Beach is closest to the center and Arrabassada is farther east. Measure a beachfront address against the walks you plan to the monuments.
Tarragona’s city station has regional trains. High-speed trains stop at Camp de Tarragona, outside the center, so you need a bus or taxi on arrival. Reus is the closest airport, and Barcelona has more flights.

The hilltop old quarter has the cathedral, the Roman walls and Plaça del Fòrum among narrow pedestrian lanes. It is the place for a history-first stay, but with luggage you climb uphill from the station or coast.
Around here: Tarragona Cathedral, Roman walls, Plaça del Fòrum
This central axis runs from Plaça Imperial Tàrraco to the Balcó del Mediterrani. The blocks around Plaça Corsini have the Modernist market, shops and easy bus access, and the old quarter is a walk away.
Around here: Rambla Nova, Mercat Central, Balcó del Mediterrani
The fishing quarter faces the harbor, and seafood restaurants line its streets. It is better for port walks and fish suppers than for quick access to the cathedral, which is uphill.
Around here: Port Museum, Sant Pere church, Moll de Costa
Miracle Beach lies below the amphitheatre and the rail line, and Arrabassada is farther east. A seafront hotel is handy for swimming but adds distance to the old quarter and the station, so look at the address.
Around here: Platja del Miracle, Platja de l’Arrabassada, Roman amphitheatre
May and June are good for long walks and early beach days. July and August highs average near 84 °F. September and October see more rain, though the sea can still be warm. Winter is mild for the Roman sites and port.
Reus Airport (REU) is about 4 miles from Tarragona; Barcelona–El Prat (BCN) is about 51 miles away. The city station and the separate Camp de Tarragona high-speed station serve different rail routes.

The Part Alta, with medieval lanes and Roman remains at the door. In a historic building, ask about vehicle access and stairs.
A room near Miracle or farther east can face the Mediterranean. Ask for the room category and whether the view is clear.
