Vigo climbs steeply above its working harbour on the Ría de Vigo. Casco Vello and the ferry quay sit at the water’s edge; Bouzas, Samil beach and the Cíes Islands draw visitors farther west.
Casco Vello rises from the port in narrow stone lanes to Praza da Constitución. Around Porta do Sol and Rúa do Príncipe, shops and cafés occupy the upper centre; Monte do Castro gives a view across the estuary. The walk back uphill from the ferry quay is short but steep.
Vigo Urzáiz handles most long-distance trains, while Guixar serves services from Portugal. Ferries leave from the central port for Cangas and the Cíes Islands. In peak season, a Cíes visit needs advance authorisation from the Galician government before you buy the ferry ticket.
Samil is Vigo’s long urban beach west of the centre, across from the Cíes Islands. Bouzas is a former fishing quarter with a waterfront walk and local restaurants. A hotel in the centre is easier for ferries and trains. From the western coast, the station and port are a bus or car ride away.

Stone streets around Praza da Constitución descend to the ferry quay and seafood market at A Pedra. Stay here for Cíes boats and old-town evenings. The climb toward Porta do Sol and the rail stations is steep with luggage.
Around here: Praza da Constitución, A Pedra, Estación Marítima
Porta do Sol links the old quarter with pedestrian Rúa do Príncipe and the shopping streets around MARCO. Monte do Castro rises behind the centre. The ferries and restaurants are walkable from here. Samil beach is a bus ride away.
Around here: Porta do Sol, Rúa do Príncipe, MARCO
Most mainline trains and the bus station are at Vigo Urzáiz. Trains from Portugal use Vigo Guixar. A hotel near either cuts the transfer. They are separate stations, so check which one your train uses. The ferry quay is downhill from both.
Around here: Vigo Urzáiz, Vigo Guixar, Ascensor Halo
Bouzas has a small old fishing centre and a promenade along the ría. Nearby Alcabre has the Museo do Mar and small beaches. It is quieter than the central port, but ferries to Cangas or Cíes leave from downtown rather than this waterfront.
Around here: Bouzas waterfront, Museo do Mar de Galicia, Praia de Santa Baia
Samil’s long beach faces the Cíes Islands and has a wide promenade. Stay here if the beach comes first. The centre and the rail stations are farther east, so for early ferries, sort out the bus or parking before you book.
Around here: Praia de Samil, Cíes Islands view, Paseo de Samil
June to September is drier and warmer, with airport average highs around 73–77 °F. The coast is often milder than the inland airport station. October to January is wet. If the Cíes ferry is the point of the trip, leave a spare day.
Vigo Airport lies east of town. Vigo Urzáiz is the main rail and bus hub. Guixar takes the trains from Portugal. Ferries leave from the downtown waterfront.
