About Gijon

Gijón faces the Cantabrian Sea on both sides of the Cimavilla headland. San Lorenzo has the long promenade. Poniente has the aquarium and the rail museum. From the center, between them, you can walk to both.

Cimavilla climbs toward Santa Catalina hill and Eduardo Chillida’s Elogio del Horizonte. At its foot are Plaza Mayor, the marina and San Pedro church. It has cider bars and older streets, and it gets lively in the evening.

San Lorenzo beach curves east from Cimavilla, lined by the promenade known as El Muro. Stay here to be by the sea, but at high tide there is less sand. Farther east, Isabel la Católica Park and El Molinón stadium lead toward the botanical garden and Laboral cultural complex.

West of the marina, Poniente beach sits by the aquarium and the Asturias Railway Museum. The railway and bus stations are on this side of the center, so it is handy when you arrive. Calle Corrida and the streets around Plaza del Instituto are the shopping core, between the two beaches.

Summer is mild, not Mediterranean hot. Atlantic rain can come in any month, and November has the most wet days in the 1991–2020 normals. Walk around the center, and take a local bus to Laboral and the botanical garden.
