Gijón faces the Cantabrian Sea on both sides of the Cimavilla headland. San Lorenzo has the long promenade. Poniente has the aquarium and the rail museum. From the center, between them, you can walk to both.
Cimavilla climbs toward Santa Catalina hill and Eduardo Chillida’s Elogio del Horizonte. At its foot are Plaza Mayor, the marina and San Pedro church. It has cider bars and older streets, and it gets lively in the evening.
San Lorenzo beach curves east from Cimavilla, lined by the promenade known as El Muro. Stay here to be by the sea, but at high tide there is less sand. Farther east, Isabel la Católica Park and El Molinón stadium lead toward the botanical garden and Laboral cultural complex.
West of the marina, Poniente beach sits by the aquarium and the Asturias Railway Museum. The railway and bus stations are on this side of the center, so it is handy when you arrive. Calle Corrida and the streets around Plaza del Instituto are the shopping core, between the two beaches.
Summer is mild, not Mediterranean hot. Atlantic rain can come in any month, and November has the most wet days in the 1991–2020 normals. Walk around the center, and take a local bus to Laboral and the botanical garden.

The old fishermen’s quarter rises to Santa Catalina and Elogio del Horizonte. Stay here for cider bars, Plaza Mayor and the harbor. The upper streets are steep, and rooms near the bars hear the nightlife.
Around here: Elogio del Horizonte, Plaza Mayor, Puerto Deportivo
The shopping streets around Calle Corrida and Plaza del Instituto sit between the two beaches. Stay here if your days move between San Lorenzo, Poniente and the bus station.
Around here: Calle Corrida, Plaza del Instituto, Teatro Jovellanos
El Muro follows San Lorenzo beach. Farther east are Isabel la Católica Park and El Molinón, the football stadium. The station is on the other side of the center.
Around here: Playa de San Lorenzo, Parque Isabel la Católica, El Molinón
Poniente beach, the aquarium and the railway museum are west of the marina. Stay on this side for a train or coach arrival, or if the aquarium is on your list. Cimavilla and San Lorenzo are farther east.
Around here: Playa de Poniente, Acuario de Gijón, Museo del Ferrocarril de Asturias
From June through September it is mild enough for El Muro and the beaches, and August highs average around 74 °F. The sea can still feel cool, and it rains in every season. November has the most rainy days in the 1991–2020 record.
Asturias Airport (OVD) lies west of Gijón. Alsa runs a direct airport coach to the city. Gijón-Sanz Crespo has trains toward Oviedo and farther south. Regional coaches use the central bus station.
