About Venice

Venice is built on islands in a shallow lagoon. Stay in San Marco to be near the basilica and the Doge’s Palace. Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Castello are farther from them, with quieter canals and local streets.

The historic centre has six sestieri, joined by bridges and linked by waterbuses. San Marco has Piazza San Marco, the basilica and La Fenice. Across the Grand Canal, San Polo has the Rialto market and the Frari. The streets between Rialto and San Marco fill up fast, especially during the day.

Cannaregio runs from Venezia Santa Lucia station toward Fondamente Nove, with the Ghetto and long canalside walks. Santa Croce meets the bus terminal at Piazzale Roma. Dorsoduro has the Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Zattere waterfront, and the Accademia Bridge links it to San Marco. In eastern Castello, the Arsenale and Giardini lie beyond the busiest central lanes.

Lido is a separate island with beaches and a vaporetto connection to the historic centre. Mestre is on the mainland. Trains and buses cross the lagoon, but the crossing plus a walk or boat ride at the other end adds time every day. Stay on the islands if you want evening walks. A mainland room makes sense for rail trips, airport access or a tighter budget.

Walk Venice, and take a vaporetto for long stretches and the other islands. Cars stop at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto. With luggage, the bridges, stepped crossings and twisting lanes take longer than the map suggests. Spring and autumn are best for long walks. Summer is warm and humid, and winter can bring damp air and high water.

Where to stay in Venice

  • San Marco

    • First visits
    • Landmark walks
    • Theatre evenings

Stay near Piazza San Marco for the basilica, the Doge’s Palace and La Fenice. You walk the least here, but it is also the busiest part of Venice, and the narrow streets can stay busy after dinner. With luggage, check the route from the nearest vaporetto stop.

Around here: Piazza San Marco, St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, Teatro La Fenice

  • Cannaregio

    • Rail arrivals
    • Canalside walks
    • Murano trips

Cannaregio runs from Santa Lucia station past the Ghetto to Fondamente Nove, with boats to Murano. Stay here if you arrive by train or like evening canal walks. The western end is easiest with luggage. Farther east, you cross more bridges before you reach your room.

Around here: Venezia Santa Lucia, Ghetto Ebraico, Fondamente Nove, Ca’ d’Oro

  • San Polo and Santa Croce

    • Rialto visits
    • Bus arrivals
    • Short stays

In San Polo, the Rialto market, the Frari church and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco are close by. Santa Croce is toward Piazzale Roma and the buses from the mainland. Both are a short walk from where you arrive, but the streets near Rialto get crowded.

Around here: Rialto Bridge, Rialto Market, Basilica dei Frari, Piazzale Roma

  • Dorsoduro

    • Art museums
    • Canal walks
    • Longer stays

Choose Dorsoduro for the Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Campo Santa Margherita and the Zattere promenade. The Accademia Bridge crosses to San Marco, and Giudecca, across the channel, needs a boat. The streets near the campo are busy with students. The canals farther south are calmer.

Around here: Gallerie dell’Accademia, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Zattere, Santa Maria della Salute

  • Castello

    • Biennale visits
    • Quieter evenings
    • Lagoon views

Castello runs east from San Marco to the Arsenale and Giardini. Stay here for the Biennale and quieter residential lanes. From the eastern end, Rialto and Santa Lucia are a long walk or a vaporetto ride.

Around here: Arsenale, Giardini della Biennale, Via Garibaldi, San Pietro di Castello

  • Lido

    • Beach days
    • Families
    • Roomier streets

Lido has beaches and wider streets, away from the narrow canal lanes. Every museum day starts with a vaporetto to San Marco or the station side of Venice. Families who want beach time as well as the city do well here.

Around here: Lido S.M.E. vaporetto stop, Lungomare d’Annunzio, Palazzo del Cinema

  • Mestre

    • Rail connections
    • Airport access
    • Budget stays

Mestre is the mainland rail and bus hub. From a hotel near Venezia Mestre station, onward trains and airport transfers are simple. San Marco is still a trip across the lagoon, then a walk or vaporetto from Santa Lucia or Piazzale Roma.

Around here: Venezia Mestre station, Ponte della Libertà, Piazza Ferretto

Best time to visit Venice

Walk between the sestieri in April, May, September or October to miss the midsummer heat. July and August are warmer and humid, and the central routes are busy. Winter is cooler and damp. When high tides are forecast, check the local high-water notices.

Road
Buses, trams and cars reach Piazzale Roma across the Ponte della Libertà. Cars can also park at Tronchetto, but they cannot continue into the historic lanes.

Questions about Venice

Where should I stay if my arrival plans may change?

Cannaregio near Santa Lucia if you come by rail, Santa Croce near Piazzale Roma if you come by coach. Check the cancellation deadline on the room itself.

Does free cancellation cover every room at a hotel?

No. Rooms and offers have their own conditions. Read the cancellation cut-off and the payment terms before you reserve.

Can I book flexibly on Lido?

Yes. Choose a refundable rate, and look up the vaporetto route to San Marco. A flexible booking doesn’t shorten that daily trip.
