About Catania

Catania’s lava-stone streets run from Piazza del Duomo toward Etna along Via Etnea. Pick the old centre for markets and churches, the station side for rail trips, or the eastern seafront for a coastal stay.

Piazza del Duomo has the elephant fountain, the cathedral and the entrance to the Pescheria fish market. Via Etnea leads north past Piazza Stesicoro and Villa Bellini. These central streets are walkable, but traffic and evening noise change a lot from block to block.

Southwest of the Duomo, Castello Ursino and its museum sit in a quieter part of the old centre. Via Crociferi has baroque churches close to the Roman theatre. A hotel inside the historic core saves journeys. If you arrive with luggage, find out where the taxi can stop.

Around Catania Centrale and Piazza Giovanni XXIII, trains and intercity buses are close. The streets are more functional than those around the Duomo. East toward Ognina the shoreline is rocky. The sandy Playa lies south of the centre, near the airport, and needs a ride from most sightseeing hotels.

Summer afternoons are hot and dry, so keep long walks for morning or evening. Rain is more frequent from autumn into winter. Etna is a separate excursion. Check current access and conditions before you pick a route up the mountain.

Where to stay in Catania

  • Duomo and Pescheria

    • First visits
    • Markets
    • Baroque streets

The cathedral, elephant fountain and fish market sit within a few streets. Stay here for an early market visit and evening walks. The narrow lanes and lively squares mean noise, or a longer walk with luggage.

Around here: Piazza del Duomo, Fontana dell’Elefante, Cattedrale di Sant’Agata, Pescheria

  • Via Etnea and Stesicoro

    • Shopping
    • Metro access
    • Central walks

Via Etnea runs past Stesicoro and toward Villa Bellini. The metro and the shops are close. Rooms facing the main road hear more traffic than those on side streets.

Around here: Via Etnea, Piazza Stesicoro, Roman amphitheatre, Villa Bellini

  • Castello Ursino and Via Crociferi

    • Historic sights
    • Museums
    • Walking

Stay southwest of the Duomo for Castello Ursino and the Roman theatre, or east of it for Via Crociferi’s churches. Some old streets are less convenient for cars, so confirm the arrival route.

Around here: Castello Ursino, Roman theatre, Via Crociferi

  • Catania Centrale and Giovanni XXIII

    • Rail trips
    • Intercity buses
    • Early departures

Centrale station, the bus terminals and the Giovanni XXIII metro stop make a base for trips across Sicily. The Duomo and Pescheria are a longer trip from here.

Around here: Catania Centrale, Piazza Giovanni XXIII, Le Ciminiere

  • Ognina and the lungomare

    • Seafront walks
    • Quieter nights
    • Longer stays

Ognina has a small harbour and a rocky shoreline northeast of the centre. Pick it for sea air and a quiet residential setting. The Duomo and central stations need transport.

Around here: Porto di Ognina, Lungomare di Catania

Getting to Catania

Catania Fontanarossa Airport is southwest of the centre. Alibus links the terminal with Catania Centrale. The separate Fontanarossa rail stop has a shuttle to the terminal. Centrale is also the main point for trains and intercity buses.

To Catania Centrale
Alibus service; check the current timetable
To Fontanarossa rail stop
About 600 metres on foot or by airport shuttle

Take Alibus for the centre and Catania Centrale. For a regional train, the Fontanarossa rail stop is about 600 metres from the terminal on a marked pedestrian route, and a shuttle also runs. After a late arrival, or for a hotel off the bus route, a taxi is the simple answer.

Other ways to arrive

Train
Catania Centrale has services along the Ionian coast toward Taormina and Messina and south toward Syracuse.
Bus and metro
Intercity buses stop near Centrale. The metro serves Giovanni XXIII and Stesicoro, and local buses reach the districts beyond the walkable centre.
Car
The A18 runs north toward Taormina and the A19 crosses to Palermo. Central one-way streets and restricted traffic mean you should ask about hotel parking in advance.

Questions about Catania

How do I judge a Catania hotel deal?

Weigh the price and the location together. A Centrale rate suits train trips, and a Duomo room saves a ride each evening.

Where are good-value areas beyond the Duomo?

Stesicoro and the station side are worth a look. Check the distance to the Pescheria or your bus departure.

Do cheap airport rooms save money in Catania?

They can, for an early flight. On a sightseeing stay, repeated rides into the centre can outweigh the discount.
